Barnes battles Peterson for 1996 Amateur Championship
In this second installment of a weekly series that will take a look back at historical moments from various USBC Championship events over the years, former PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes battles current USBC board member Vernon Peterson for the coveted U.S. National Amateur Championship title in 1996. Barnes had not yet won a PBA title in 1996--he would not join the PBA until 1998--but anyone who had been paying attention back then had already gotten a glimpse of the struggles the star would endure in televised matches. In 2000, Barnes would appear on 12 PBA telecasts without winning a single title. And here in 1996, a 26-year-old Barnes had already gone three consecutive U.S. National Amateur Championship TV shows without a win; a loss against Peterson would make it four in a row.
