Big scores continue at Open Championships
April 30, 2011
RENO, Nev. - The month of April traditionally is known for its spring showers, and the phenomenon made its way to the USBC Open Championships this week with a flurry of honor scores at the National Bowling Stadium.
In a 15-hour span from Friday evening to Saturday morning, there were three 300s, two 800 series and a 299 game on the tournament lanes.
Doug Morton of Anchorage, Alaska, initiated the scoring deluge with the 16th perfect game of the 2011 Open Championships in his second game of singles Friday, while Chris LaSpina of Garnerville, N.Y., followed suit minutes later on the way to an 814 series and a tie for second place in Regular Singles.
Luke Voaklander of Saint Bonifacious, Minn., added his name to the mix with the 18th 300 of the year, and his efforts were seen live on BOWL.com by thousands of fans tuning in for one of 15 live-streaming broadcasts from the Open Championships this year.
Finally, former Team USA member and three-time collegiate national champion John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., overcame some footwork issues and closed out his doubles event with a 299 game, before tossing games of 269, 246 and 290 for an 805 singles series. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads Regular Singles with 826.
"This feels pretty good," said Morton, a 26-year-old right-hander, who made his third Open Championships appearance and finished singles with a 725 series to go along with 597 in doubles and 576 in team for a 1,898 all-events total. "It's hard to calm down. I just kept telling myself that I will never have this opportunity again, so make it count. We always look to come down and have a good time. I never really thought about rolling an honor score here, but you always want to do your best."
After rolling his own perfect game, LaSpina focused on keeping his composure and finished his 11th Open Championships appearance with a 256 game to tie him with Edward Rede of El Paso, Texas. As the 2011 tournament approaches its halfway point, there have been five 800s in singles and nine overall.
"This is unbelievable," said LaSpina, a 30-year-old right-hander, who bowls league at Hi-Tor Lanes and added 607 in doubles and 563 in team for a 1,984 all-events total this year at the Stadium. "I'm totally amped up right now and just didn't expect to pop out and shoot something like that. This is something I never thought I would do here. It's unbelievable. I can't stop smiling right now. That's how I feel."
Voaklander's run at perfection came in the final game of his team event after a rough start.
The 31-year-old right-hander started the night with a 154 game, but bounced back with 255 and 300 to help Linds Lakers 1 of Minneapolis to a 3,301 total. Brian Brazeau Pro Shop of Ocala, Fla., leads with 3,439.
Voaklander, who still is in search of his first Open Championships title, paced his team with a 709 set and was followed by Gary Green (695), Charles Vashaw (659), Sam Lantto (649) and John Eiss (589).
Voaklander's four teammates, along with USBC Hall of Famer Todd Savoy, who decided to bowl with his family this year, won Team All-Events in 2002 and 2006. Last year, Voaklander helped the group to second-place finishes in team and Team All-Events. Along the way, he started a game with nine consecutive strikes, but was unable to finish the job.
"This means a lot to do it front of my teammates," said Voaklander, who made his ninth Open Championships appearance. "I respect them so much, so it means a lot to do it in front of them. It's indescribable. They're a great bunch of guys. They make you feel like you're bowling at home in league."
With four eagle-winning teammates, Voaklander is used to hearing their names announced in the squad room and on the lanes. Now, he will hear his name, too.
"I always tell people we have to wait 20 minutes for all my teammates to have their achievements recognized," Voaklander said. "To be included with that group is awesome."
Szczerbinski, a 23-year-old right-hander, struggled with his footing Saturday morning and fouled three times during doubles, including a double foul after two strikes in his second game.
He started with 237 and 177, but used the sliding issue to his advantage by forcing himself to stay slow. He finished doubles with a 299 game and 713 series, while Chris Drewes of Wichita, Kan., added 702 for a 1,415 doubles total, which is just outside of the top 10. Erik Hohlbein of Renton, Wash., and Shawn Copeland of Milwaukie, Ore., lead Regular Doubles with 1,466.
Szczerbinski continued striking in singles and posted games of 269, 246 and 290. He now is fifth in Regular Singles.
"After I double fouled, I got a little upset, and that changed my mindset," said Szczerbinski, who helped Wichita State to three consecutive national titles (2008-2010). "But shooting 299 the last game boosted my spirits a little bit, and I was excited to be able to keep that going. The footwork issue kept me slow, so it was like a blessing in disguise. This is right up there on my list of accomplishments, and I'm glad the hard work I put in is still paying off."
Szczerbinski and his teammates don't bowl their team event until Sunday at 11:30 p.m. EDT.
