Bonta posts 837 in doubles at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – Brandon Bonta of Wichita, Kansas, rolled the highest set of the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Friday after connecting for games of 279, 259 and 299 in doubles for an 837 series at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

The series is tied for the 11th highest three-game total in the 120-year history of the event, and the performance ranks as the fifth highest individual set in doubles competition.

Bonta competed with his father, Kelly Bonta, during the set Friday, and they moved into the top 20 of Regular Doubles with a 1,414 total. Kelly added 577. Shawn Evans and Nicholas Fisher of Palm Bay, Florida, lead with 1,531.

Brandon now joins his father with an honor score at the USBC Open Championships. Kelly owns a pair of 300 games at the event, with perfect showings in singles during the 2007 and 2013 tournaments in Reno, Nevada.

The 21-year-old right-hander rolled 11 strikes in Game 1, which included his first eight deliveries. He added another nine strikes in Game 2.

A 4 pin on his final shot cost Bonta the chance to match his father with a 300 at the Open Championships.

Bonta is a past member of both Team USA (2023) and Junior Team USA (2022 and 2023), and he’s a current standout at Wichita State University preparing for his senior season.

He collected three gold medals and a pair of silver medals for Junior Team USA at the 2023 PANAM Bowling Youth Championships in Lima, Peru, and represented the adult team at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Bonta recorded a runner-up finish at the 2023 U.S. Amateur, and his run in 2023 also included a team victory at the Intercollegiate Team Championships with Wichita State.

He's also been named to the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association All-America team in each of his last two years with the Shockers, including a spot on the first team for the 2023-2024 season.
