Boomershine looks to repeat

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tammy Boomershine has dealt with injuries and adversity her entire bowling career, but for a short time last August she was able to put all of that our of her mind and bask in her victory at the U.S. Women's Open, a United States Bowling Congress event.
Boomershine of North Ogden, Utah, will look to regain that feeling again when she takes on a field of the top women bowlers from around the world at the 2010 U.S. Women's Open, which begins Friday, May 7 at Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas.
The 39-year-old, five-time professional women's titlist has overcome surgeries on her back, elbow, heart and nose and even during qualifying at last year's U.S. Women's Open she battled a sciatic nerve injury. She went on to defeat Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, 269-225, to win the 2009 title.
"It felt so good to get that monkey off my back after going off the women's tour after back surgery and never winning until last year," said Boomershine, who won four titles before being sidelined by back surgery in 1997. "I'm still enjoying the moment, even though it has been nine months now."
Boomershine said she feels healthy heading into this year's event, but knows defending the title won't be easy.
"I know that I'm going to have to bowl well and make good shots," said Boomershine, who was the rookie of the year on the women's pro tour in 1994 and the runner-up for player of the year in 1996. "At least I have some sort of momentum and confidence knowing that I've already done this once and I can do it again. But it's definitely going to be tough."
This year's U.S. Women's Open will feature a revamped format that includes round-robin match play. Players will compete in three eight-game blocks from May 7-9 with the top 24 players advancing to match play May 10-11. The five players with the best 48-game totals, including match-play bonus pins, will compete in the stepladder finals. All qualifying and match-play rounds will be broadcast live on BOWL.com.
After the final five are determined, action will shift to the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas, for the live ESPN2-televised finals at 8 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 12.
