Bowling community reflects on 2010 USBC HOF inductions
On Wednesday, May 12, 2010, the new Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame hosted its first USBC Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, Texas. This year’s class of inductees includes PBA legends Marshall Holman and John Handegard in the Superior Performance and Veterans categories respectively, women's pro bowling legend Kim Terrell-Kearney in the Superior Performance category, and Betty Barnes for Meritorious Service. As other bowling Hall of Famers and legends gathered to celebrate the occasion, they shared their thoughts on the careers and contributions of these four great figures.
ON THE INDUCTIONS OF MARSHALL HOLMAN AND JOHN HANDEGARD
Chris Barnes, 12-time PBA titlist
I grew up watching Marshall. He was a boyhood idol well through my teens. Then the first time I met him was as a competitor at the 1989 Brunswick Shootout, and I got the other side of Marshall that’s been referenced, and I incurred the wrath of Marshall and he won and continued on with his legendary career. Later on, I got to meet him off the lanes and play golf with him and got to know how good a man he is and how genuine a man he is. He was just a tremendous talent; there are few people who are more deserving of being in the Hall of Fame than Marshall Holman.
Del Ballard, PBA Hall of Famer
Marshall was my idol when I was growing up. I tried to pattern my game after his. I could not be happier; it could not happen to a better guy and I am very happy for him.
Bob Hart, USBC Hall of Famer
I think it’s wonderful that they have both been inducted; it is so well-deserved. John Handegard, I bowled with him on the Senior Tour and he was by far the best bowler on the Senior Tour without a doubt. It’s nice to see him be rewarded at this late time in his life.
And Marshall, what else can you say about Marshall? As Bo Burton said in his introduction, Marshall was a great draw on television and he was a great draw here. His speech today was very sincere and it was great. He did a good job; all the inductees did. I though it was wonderful and I am very glad I was here today.
Bill Spigner, USBC Hall of Famer
The speeches were terrific and very tear-jerking for me. I knew Marshall right when he came out on tour and I remember saying to a friend of mine during Marshall’s first year on tour that he could become one of the best bowlers that ever lived. I just was in awe of how he threw the ball. He was so unbelievably exciting to watch.
John Handegard, we all knew that he was just a hard-working guy who had a lot of heartbreaks on Tour early on, and he kept fighting and coming back. What he did as a Senior bowler and getting into the USBC Hall of Fame in the Veterans category, there could not be a happier ending for a guy that just never quit. It is very inspiring to me.
ON THE INDUCTIONS OF KIM TERRELL-KEARNEY AND BETTY BARNES
Kelly Kulick, 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions winner
Kim's induction is very well-deserved. She has ten professional titles and a few majors. Her character is great both on and off the lanes. She represents herself so well and I know when she walks through the Hall of Fame and sees her name it will be priceless.
As for Betty, the expression is that 'you never say no to Betty,' and that's true. She really is a spokesperson for women's bowling and a true pioneer when it comes to getting things done.
Liz Johnson, two-time U.S. Women's Open champion
Kim is one of the best people on and off the lanes with many titles. It is very well deserving; she is the nicest person you could ever meet.
Robin Romeo, USBC Hall of Famer
I have known Kim for a long time and I have competed against her and she is a class act all the way. It was exciting to see her go in; she gave a wonderful speech that brought a lot of tears to my eyes.
Anne Marie Duggan, USBC Hall of Famer
Today was wonderful. The speeches were great and it was a good time. It was really a proud moment for my friends Kim Terrell-Kearney and Betty Barnes; I am really proud for both of them.
Leanne Hulsenberg, USBC Hall of Famer
Kim is my best friend, so I was so happy to be here to celebrate with her. It is my first Hall of Fame ceremony since I was inducted. It was great and I would like to be able to go each year. I though it was great today.
Fran Deken, USBC Hall of Famer
Their induction into the USBC Hall of Fame was well-deserved. Betty Barnes has been a friend for a long time and so has Kim, and I can’t think of two better people to be in the Hall of Fame.
Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, USBC Hall of Famer
I remember Betty Barnes when I first started bowling on Tour. Betty Barnes was one of the WIBC women that you were guaranteed to see at every women’s event. She deserved the award for Meritorious Service because she truly devoted herself to making life better for me and everyone else.
Kim is the epitome of a professional bowler, a professional person, and a friend. She very much deserves everything she received today, and I am proud to be in the Hall of Fame with her.
