Butturff, Pate qualify for 2019 Pan American Games team

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jakob Butturff not only earned his first major title at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Masters, he also secured his spot on the team that will represent the United States at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, later this year.
Butturff of Tempe, Arizona, and Nick Pate of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, earned the two men’s positions on Team USA for the Pan American Games, which will take place July 26 through Aug. 11, based on their performances at the USBC Masters and the Pan American Games Trials.
Heading into the Masters, Butturff and Pate were first and second, respectively, in the two-part qualifying process for Team USA members that started in March with the Pan American Games Trials held at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington.
At the Pan American Trials, Team USA members bowled 24 games over four days and across four different lane conditions. Players earned points based on their daily finishes and for their 24-game pinfall totals, which accounted for 60 percent of the qualifying process.
The remaining 40 percent of the qualifying process took place at the 2019 USBC Masters, where Team USA members earned points based on their finishes in qualifying and the match-play bracket.
Among Team USA members at the Masters, Butturff was third in qualifying and first in the bracket, while Pate was sixth in both qualifying and the bracket to edge AJ Johnson of Oswego, Illinois, for the second spot on the 2019 Pan American team.
The two women’s representative will be determined at the 2019 USBC Queens, which will take place May 15-21 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas.
Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas, leads the women’s qualifying through the Pan Am Trials and is followed by Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, Shannon O’Keefe of Shiloh, Illinois, Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California, and Sydney Brummett of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Pan American Games, held every four years, are the second largest multi-sport event, bringing together the 41 National Olympic Committees that make up PanamSports. The United States Olympic Committee has specific requirements for the selection of athletes who will compete in the event.
