RENO, Nev. - Larry Rumple of Malibu, Calif., got into a better rhythm with every shot during his team event at the National Bowling Stadium on Thursday and finished with a wave of strikes as he recorded the 24th perfect game of the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

The 66-year-old right-hander started with games of 183 and 202 before firing 12 consecutive strikes for a 685 series. He helped Racette Insurance 2 of Lakewood, Calif., to a 3,053 total. Lodge Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla., leads with a record score of 3,538.

As the strikes began to add up Thursday night, Rumple was reminded of days gone by as bowlers and spectators turned their attention his way.

"In league, it used to be that when you shot 300 there would be dead silence," said Rumple, who made his 24th USBC Open Championships appearance. "Now, there could be three 300s shot, and you wouldn't even know it. But here, I could feel the people watching. You're very conscious of what's going on. They're rooting for you, though, and it's a good feeling."

Rumple felt more comfortable on the 41-foot Sport Bowling-certified lane condition as the evening progressed, and he appreciated the difficulty and precision needed to conquer the oil pattern.

"I felt it out the first game," Rumple said. "The second game was better, and by the third game, I got into a rhythm. It's not a league shot, and there is more pressure because of the atmosphere."

With his place in Open Championships history reserved, Rumple enjoyed the chance to share the moment with friends more than anything else.

"I'm happy to be here, and if I bowl well it's a bonus," said Rumple, who bowls regularly at Harley's Simi Bowl in Simi Valley, Calif . "I'm just happy to be able to do it and to be around friends."
