California two-hander shoots 300 at OC
May 18, 2013
RENO, Nev. - Will Garber of Modesto, Calif., has enjoyed continued success at the National Bowling Stadium, and that streak continued Friday as he rolled the 19th perfect game of the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
The 19-year-old, who uses a two-handed approach and attacks the lanes from the left side, started his team event with games of 146 and 201 before firing 12 consecutive strikes for a 300 game and 647 series. All of the other 300 games this year have been by right-handed bowlers.
Garber has been using the unique style since he was 5 years old. His father is former Professional Bowlers Association exempt player Wayne Garber, who was on hand to take in the historic moment. The younger Garber made a ball change and small hand adjustment after his rough start, and the pins started falling his way.
"I made a ball change in the second game but couldn't get any strings going," said Garber, who made his third USBC Open Championships appearance and helped Yosemite Lanes 1 of Modesto to a 3,107 total. "I stayed in the same spot the third game and just made a little hand adjustment, and the strikes started coming. I told myself to focus on one at a time, keep my feet slow and make good shots, because that's all you can do."
Garber's previous success at the NBS included a perfect game during the PBA West/Northwest Regions Sands Regency Casino Open presented by Roto Grip in September 2012 and a runner-up finish at the PBA Tri-Regional Sands Regency Open presented by Hammer three months later. Those efforts helped him to 2012 PBA West Region Rookie of the Year honors.
His 300 in September was broadcast live on Xtra Frame, the PBA's online bowling channel, and the cameras once again turned his way Friday as the final frame of his latest triumph was shown live on BowlTV (tune in at the 2:41 mark).
The cameras were set up to show USBC Hall of Famer Jeff Richgels and Open Championships lifetime average leader Gail Myers Jr. lead their talented The 11thFrame.com teams onto the lanes, but Garber stole the show.
"My 300 at the regional was on Xtra Frame, and my father was in the booth doing commentary," Garber said. "It actually helped this time when everybody was watching, because I was able to remind myself that I've been there before. There's no place like the Stadium. I do well here. I can't explain it."
Garber had been looking forward to this Open Championships appearance for some time, and was happy he got to share the moment with family and friends.
"I've been looking forward to it for so long, and to start in the 140s, I couldn't stop thinking about it," Garber said. "I told myself to just make good shots after that. It was awesome. I was so glad to do it with my whole team, family and friends there."
