TOULON, France - Canada's Michael Schmidt won his second career QubicaAMF World Cup title, while Aumi Guerra gave the Dominican Republic its first title in the event on Saturday.

Schmidt, who won the World Cup in 2005 and finished second last year, defeated England's Matt Miller, 2-1, in the best-of-three games championship match. Guerra took down top seed Gye Min-Young of Korea, 2-1, to win the women's title at Bowling de Provence.

In the championship match, Schmidt lost the opener 246-205 but rebounded to take the next two games, 212-207 and 224-188.

"I'm just glad I was able to win this event again before I turned 30," said Schmidt, who will celebrate his 30th birthday on Tuesday. "To be honest, it won't sink in for a little while. I'm just happy I had the opportunity to be in this position again."

Schmidt swept Biboy Rivera of the Philippines with wins of 247-215 and 252-202 in the semifinal for the right to take on top seed Miller.

In the women's final, Guerra also dropped the opening game, 226-203, but rallied for wins of 202-196 and 240-196. Gye had a chance to lock up the title in the second game, but left a 4-7-10 split in the final frame. Guerra stepped up and threw a double in the 10th frame to extend the match.

"The feeling is so indescribable; I'm usually quite eloquent, but I'm at a loss for words," Guerra said. "I tried to stay in the moment and keep it between me and the pins. I was able to do that, and I thought that was the key for me."

In the semifinal, Guerra knocked out Fiona Banks of England, 237-222 and 246-188.

Team USA's Carolyn Dorin-Ballard finished fourth in this year's World Cup, missing the stepladder finals by just 60 pins. Her teammate, John Szczerbinski, took fifth on the men's side.

The World Cup is the largest international bowling tournament in the world in terms of the number of countries competing. This year, 93 countries competed with 92 players in the men's field and 76 in the women's division.
