Char Hammel top qualifier at Senior Queens

ARLINGTON, Texas - Char Hammel of Las Vegas earned top qualifier honors Sunday at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens presented by Storm.

Char Hammel 2012 Senior QueensHammel, who won the Senior Queens in 2010, finished qualifying with a 15-game total of 3,460 (230.67 average) at the International Training and Research Center. She leads a group of 16 of the top senior women bowlers in the country age 50 and up into Monday's match play.

"I'm excited to have led against a strong field of Hall of Famers and some of these new 50-year-olds," Hammel said. "I don't think I've ever been the top seed in this event, even the year I won."

In the final block of qualifying Sunday, Hammel put on a stellar performance, finishing the five-game block with 1,206 on games of 267, 211, 238, 247 and 243.

The top 16 players in the qualifying standings advanced to the double-elimination match-play bracket, which begins Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern. Qualifying second was Mandy Wilson of Dayton, Ohio, while Kristy Whitcher of Belfair, Wash., finished qualifying third.

Defending champion Paula Vidad of Sun City, Calif., was guaranteed no worse than the No. 16 seed in the bracket, but managed to earn the No. 8 seed by virtue of her qualifying scores.

Robin Romeo Triple CrownThe Senior Queens qualifying also capped off the Senior Women's Triple Crown Series, which is a special competition for bowlers who compete in the Senior Queens, Senior U.S. Women's Open and National Golden Ladies Classic.

The top 10 players in the Triple Crown standings, which combines qualifying totals from all three events, advanced to the Triple Crown Shoot-Out presented by The Orleans. Robin Romeo of Van Nuys, Calif., came out on top in the one-game, single-elimination bracket to earn the title and $1,000 prize.
