Bowling in his first PBA50 Tour tournament, six-time PBA Tour winner Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., took an 1,806 actual eight-game pinfall and a 6-1-1 match play record to the lead after the first match play round of the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Storm Thursday morning.
Warren, who has recently returned to competitive bowling after badly breaking his leg in a fall in 2013, had game of 259, 214, 245, 236, 247, 227, 214 and 164 in this morning’s round.
“That could have been so big but I left some on the table that last game,” said the 51-year-old Warren. “I had a couple splits in the last game and never recovered after that.
“Overall, I’ve been getting better and better the whole tournament,” he added. “After so many games, you eventually find out what the lanes (conditions) are doing and you just draw on that experience to make good shots.”
Warren, who leads with a 5,836 26-game overall pinfall, that includes match play bonus pins, holds a 13-pin lead over qualifying leader Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., who finished with a 5,823 pinfall.
Warren moved ahead of Jurek despite Jurek’s 6-2 match play record. Jurek, who led all three rounds of qualifying, had games of 176, 204, 206, 181, 214, 204, 239 and 177 in this morning’s round.
Rounding out the top five were two-time PBA50 Player of the Year and 2011 Senior U.S. Open winner Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, 5,735; 2012 USBC Senior Masters winner Mike Edwards, Tulsa, 5,704 and defending Senior U.S. Open champion and reigning PBA50 Player of the Year Hall of Famer Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., 5,689. Duke came all the way from 17th to start the round thanks to a 7-1 match play record.
The 48-player match play field returns this afternoon for another eight-game round after which the field will be cut to 24 players who will advance to two more match play rounds on Friday that will determine the top four players for the stepladder finals at 4 p.m. PT.
