Classified bowlers shine at USBC Open
BATON ROUGE, La. - Just like the weather in Baton Rouge, the scores at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships are starting to heat up, too.
This weekend, the Classified Division leaderboards were shaken up a bit with new frontrunners in team and all-events and a close call in doubles.
Wafflers of Romeoville, Ill., snuck into the Classified Team lead with games of 833, 847 and 888 for a 2,568 total at the Baton Rouge River Center on Saturday night, while Sheldon Goldberg of Hollywood, Fla., grabbed the top spot in Classified All-Events with a 1,739 effort earlier in the day. The three-week reign of Country Boys of Stickney, S.D. (2,553) came to an end, and Goldberg topped Mike Raburn, who previously held the all-events lead with 1,676.
Scot Keith set the pace for Wafflers with a 565 series and was followed by Keith White (529), Richard Eisenhut (521), Kristine Kreuser (478) and Richard Janicke (475). Kreuser and White cruised into second place in Classified Doubles with a 1,153 effort Sunday morning, falling just behind Randy Tennant of Onida, S.D., and Tim Luken of Gettysburg, S.D., who lead with 1,231.
"We probably could've done a lot better in team, but it feels good to be on top," White said. "Being second in doubles is nice, too, and Kristine bowled a great series to get us up there. The condition here is really tough, so anytime you bowl well enough to get close to the top really means something."
Goldberg's run included a 607 series in singles, 591 in doubles and 541 in team.
To be eligible for the Classified Division, a team must have a combined average of 900 or less and 360 or less for doubles. Individuals must have an average of 180 or less for singles and all-events.
