RENO, Nev. - Tony Renggli of University Place, Wash., got married over the weekend and then headed to Reno for the USBC Open Championships, which his new wife assured him would not count as their honeymoon.
Their trip to the National Bowling Stadium turned into a celebration nonetheless as Renggli and his longtime friend and co-worker, Jeff Matesa of Graham, Wash., moved into the top spot in Classified Doubles with a 1,202 total Tuesday.
"My wife (Christine) was happy to come to Reno with me," said Renggli, a 42-year-old left-hander who contributed a 594 series to the doubles effort. "But she reminded me that this is not going to be our honeymoon."
Matesa, a 41-year-old right-hander, added a 608 series, just the third 600 in six Open Championships appearances. Bryce Bray and Jon Lee of Thief River Falls, Minn., previously held the lead with 1,138.
Renggli and Matesa both bowl league at Narrows Plaza Bowl in Tacoma, Wash., and both are longshoremen for Pacific Maritime Associates. They have worked together for more than 20 years.
"We always bowl when the Open Championships is in Reno," said Matesa, whose last 600 at the tournament came in singles in 1998. "We love to come here to relax and bet on some horse races. We bowled well in the team event last year, but we thought we could do better."
Matesa added 557 in singles and 487 in team for a 1,652 all-events total, while Renggli had 497 in singles and 493 in team for 1,584.
Also on Tuesday, Curt VanLaningham of Ogallala, Neb., took over the Classified All-Events lead with a 1,764 total.
VanLaningham started with 609 in team and followed it up with 594 in singles and 561 in doubles. Sheldon Goldberg of Hollywood, Fla., previously held the lead with 1,721.
The 38 year-old right-hander, who bowls at Cornhusker Lanes, used a new ball that he had drilled in Reno just prior to his team event.
"I tried to match the ball to the lanes here," said VanLandingham, a 2010 Nebraska State Tournament all-events champion. "You can't use the same balls here that work at home."
Presenting sponsors for the 2011 USBC Open Championships are Circus Circus, Eldorado Hotel Casino and Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno, Nev. Other sponsors include Sands Regency Casino Hotel, official brackets sponsor, Kegel, official lane maintenance provider, Humana, official registration sponsor, US Steltronic, official scoring system, and supporting sponsors Storm Bowling Products, UPS, Nationwide Insurance, Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa, Harrah's Reno Casino and Hotel and Peppermill Hotel Casino.
