The United States Bowling Congress Collegiate schedule wrapped up 2019 with a pair of events this week in Pennsylvania, with four teams capturing their first Tier I title of the season.
The William Paterson men and Robert Morris-Illinois women were victorious at the Roto Grip Keystone Quaker Classic, while the Indiana Tech women and Wisconsin-Whitewater men claimed the top spots at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic.
The Keystone Quaker Classic was held at Haja Rose Bowl in Allentown, while the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic was contested at Jordan Lanes in Whitehall from Dec. 27-30. Each event featured five traditional games and 20 Baker games, with total pinfall determining the champion in each division.
The men's division at the Keystone Quaker Classic saw William Paterson in front for all but one game the entire tournament. Despite a slow start to the final Baker set, the Pioneers were able to regain their momentum and collect the win with a 9,144 total.
The next three spots in the standings came down to the final game as Indiana Tech (9,065) and St. John's (9,057) were able to surpass Wisconsin-Whitewater (9,018), which entered the finale in second place.
St. John's Andrew Hall paced the men's field at the Keystone Quaker Classic, posting a five-game total of 1,149 (229.8 average). William Paterson's Tiler Levesque (1,104) and Hunter Machin (1,087) finished in second and fourth, respectively, while Wisconsin-Whitewater's Brandon Mooney (1,099) and Donovan Thomas (1,071) also finished in the top five.
The Robert Morris-Illinois women were able to successfully defend their title at the Keystone Quaker Classic on the strength of their showing during Baker competition. The Eagles regained the lead from Indiana Tech during its second Baker block and maintained the top spot with an 8,688 score.
Indiana Tech held onto second with 8,513, while Pikeville also made a run during its Baker sets and finished third with 8,473.
Lawrence Tech's Sydney Clark put together a consistent block to earn top individual honors in the women's division, posting a 1,070 total (214 average). She was joined in the top five by Indiana Tech's Maryssa Carey (1,017), Lakyn Edwards (1,014), Briana Marquis (1,009) and Robert Morris-Illinois' Danyell Chupp (1,000).
The Indiana Tech women were dominant on the way to victory at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic, collecting the win by more than 300 pins with a 9,455 total.
Robert Morris-Illinois was second with 9,148, and Pikeville finished third with 8,904.
The top three spots in the women's individual standings also belonged to Indiana Tech, highlighted by a 300 game from Maryssa Carey. She earned the top spot with a 1,186 score (237.2 average), while teammates Lakyn Edwards (1,095) and Brittney Kinney (1,083) followed in the standings.
Wright State's Ashlyn Stollings (1,067) and Pikeville's Jessica Wolfe (1,057) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The men's division at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic went down to the final frame as Wisconsin-Whitewater needed a mark in the 10th to make up a 47-pin deficit and surpass Indiana Tech. Ryan Winters delivered a strike to complete the comeback and secure the victory, helping the Warhawks to a 9,167 total.
Indiana Tech finished with 9,156, while William Paterson took third with 9,061.
William Paterson's Tiler Levesque led the individual standings with a 1,170 total, a 234 average. Indiana Tech's Dawson Maier was second with 1,146, while St. John's Brandon Soedarmasto (1,124), Wisconsin-Whitewater's Ryan Winters (1,124) and St. John's Nicholas Perrone (1,092) also recorded top-five finishes.
