Collegiate Ticker - Dec. 11, 2024

After a short break for Thanksgiving, the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season resumed last weekend in Addison, Illinois, with the Warhawk Open.

The men’s varsity field saw 21 teams and the women’s side had 19 teams. They bowled five individual games and 16 Baker games before the top eight in each division advanced to a best-of-three match-play bracket.

Mount Mercy led the men’s field by over 500 pins to earn the No. 1 seed for match play, joined by Calumet, Saint Xavier, Wisconsin-Whitewater, St. Ambrose, Marian-Wisconsin, Purdue and Davenport, respectively.

St. Ambrose came out of the bracket as the winner, sweeping all three schools that stood in their way – Wisconsin-Whitewater, Mount Mercy and Marian-Wisconsin – to win the Warhawk Open.

Mount Mercy teammates Blake Walsh and Zach Andresen led the men’s field, with Walsh having a five-game total of 1,191 and Andresen shooting 1,132. Walsh’s 238.2 average is now the fifth-highest average in the tournament’s history. St. Ambrose’s Kendric Siders had 1,121 for third, while Wisconsin-Whitewater’s James Stewart was not far behind with 1,119. Purdue’s Jake Diaz rounded out the top five with 1,106.

On the women’s side, Mount Mercy qualified as the top seed for match play, with Saint Xavier, Davenport, Governors State, Culver-Stockton, Judson, St. Ambrose and Calumet joining the Mustangs.

The championship match saw Saint Xavier and Calumet face off, with Saint Xavier winning in three games to clinch the tournament victory.

Culver-Stockton’s Rachel Moore led the way during the individual block and set the women’s tournament average record at the event with a five-game total of 1,139 for an average of 227.8. Second belonged to Mount Mercy’s Brooke Salzman with 1,093, while Governors State’s Olivia Daujatas was third at 1,066. Davenport’s Kasey Eaton (1,063) and Marian-Wisconsin’s Jocelynn Eggert (1,046) rounded out the top five.
