Collegiate Ticker - Dec. 27, 2023

The 2023 portion of this year’s United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season officially came to an end when the Glenn Carlson Invitational and Collegiate Shootout took place in Las Vegas last week.

The Glenn Carlson Invitational was the first event of the week in Las Vegas with 47 men’s varsity teams and 32 women’s varsity teams competing. All teams bowled nine individual games before a cut to the top 16 men’s teams and top eight women’s teams for single elimination bracket match play. All matches were best-of-five Baker matches.

On the men’s side, the finals would see Webber International and Wichita State face off against each other with Wichita coming out on top with a 3-0 sweep.

The Shockers also had a pair of teammates take home all-tournament team honors as Spencer Robarge placed second with a 1,984 total, and Carter Street was third with 1,956. Jullian Salinas of Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah led all men with a 2,032 total while SCAD-Savannah teammate Justin Bohn placed fourth at 1,909. Tennessee Wesleyan’s Duane Jones was fifth with 1,900.

Wichita would also take home the team victory on the women’s side as it swept Ottawa- Kansas in the finals.

There was no time to rest for these teams as the Collegiate Shootout came right after the Glenn Carlson, so all the teams came back to bowl six individual games and 16 Baker games before the top eight teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions were split into two pods of four. Each pod bowled four Baker games, and the top two teams in the semi-finals moved on to the final pod.

The first men’s pod had Saint Xavier and Wichita advance while the second had Webber and Purdue move on to the championship pod. Purdue started with a 267, but it wasn’t enough as Webber would take home the victory with an 876 total. Wichita was second with 862, Purdue third with 857 and Saint Xavier placed fourth with 766.
