At last weekend's Motiv Warhawk Open in Addison, Illinois, the Midland men went undefeated in the bracket to capture the win, while the Saint Xavier women won the deciding game in each round of match play to collect the victory.
The event was held at Stardust Bowl and featured 32 men's varsity teams and 23 women's varsity programs. Teams bowled six traditional games and 16 Baker games to determine the eight teams in each division advancing to the bracket. All bracket rounds featured a best-of-three Baker format.
In the men's division, Midland qualified for the bracket in sixth place with an 8,535 total. The Warriors swept No. 3 Mount Mercy (2-0) and No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) to advance to the final against No. 4 St. Francis-Illinois.
St. Francis-Illinois defeated No. 5 Saint Xavier (2-0) and top qualifier St. Ambrose (2-0) to advance to the title match.
In the final, Midland recorded wins of 208-202 and 186-146 to earn the men's title.
St. Ambrose led qualifying with an 8,992 total and was followed by Huntington (8,861) and Mount Mercy (8,729). Calumet was the final team to advance to the bracket in eighth place with 8,502.
Calumet's Stefano Cittadino collected his first individual title by pacing the men's division for six games with a 1,279 total, a 213.16 average.
Culver-Stockton's Joey Novick (1,246) and Mount Mercy's Donovan Grubaugh (1,232) finished in second and third, respectively, while Huntington's Derek Leyba made his second consecutive all-tournament team by placing fourth with 1,220. Minnesota State-Mankato's Shane Jordan rounded out the top five with a 1,213 total.
On the women's side, Saint Xavier finished qualifying in fifth place with an 8,126 total to set up an opening-round match against No. 4 Marian-Wisconsin. After splitting the first two games, the Cougars won Game 3, 203-201, to move onto the semifinals.
Saint Xavier defeated No. 8 William Penn, 2-1, to advance to the final against No. 6 Midland.
Midland made its way to the title tilt with wins over No. 3 Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) and No. 7 Davenport (2-1).
Midland took the first game of the championship round 185-146, but Saint Xavier escaped with a one-pin victory in Game 2 (188-187) to force a deciding game for the title. The Cougars posted a 231-219 win in Game 3 to record the victory.
Mount Mercy was the top qualifier for the bracket, finishing with an 8,482 total. St. Francis-Illinois was second with 8,226, and Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 8,193. William Penn earned the final spot in the bracket with a 7,974 total.
Midland's Hannah Triske took home her second individual win of the season, posting a 1,225 total (204.16 average).
St. Ambrose's Megan Hess (1,220) and Mount Mercy's Ayra Aminuddin (1,164) continued their impressive runs this season, finishing in second and third, respectively. Hess has four top-five finishes this season, and Aminuddin has recorded six top-five finishes.
Judson's Chloe Siezega (1,162) made her third all-tournament team of the season, and Mount Mercy's Jenna Williams (1,158) recorded her second top-five finish of the year.
In other collegiate action:
- At the Mustang Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa, the Morningside women and men were victorious in their respective brackets.
- At the American Heartland Bowling Association No. 3 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Trine men and Adrian women each recorded victories by less than 65 pins.
- At the Lincoln Memorial Challenge in Harrogate, Tennessee, the Lincoln Memorial women and men swept the top spots.
- At the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference No. 3 in Lansing, Michigan, the Indiana Tech men and Lawrence Tech women rolled to big wins.
- At the Wagner Winter Invite in Staten Island, New York, the St. Francis-New York women posted a 3-1 record to lead the field in total pinfall.
There will not be any events this weekend, as schools prepare for their winter breaks.
The season will resume Dec. 18-19 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas with the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. The Collegiate Shoot-Out will take place on Dec. 20-21, also at the South Point Bowling Plaza. Both will be Tier I events and broadcast live on BowlTV.com.
