The Great Lakes Bowling Conference (GLBC) conducted its championship event last weekend in Freeport, Illinois, and the Western Illinois men and Viterbo women conquered the bracket to claim titles.
Teams earned points from each of the four GLBC events held throughout the season, based on their match-play record, and the top eight men's teams and top six women's teams advanced to the conference championship.
The conference championship was held at 4 Seasons Bowling Center, and the format featured a pair of best-of-three Baker matches leading to the championship round. The champions in each division were determined in a best-of-five Baker match.
The Western Illinois men entered the bracket as the No. 4 seed and swept No. 2 Highland Community College, 3-0, in the title match. The Leathernecks averaged 217 in the title tilt.
Western Illinois recorded an upset against top-seed Wisconsin-Whitewater in the semifinals, knocking off the Warhawks, 2-1. Wisconsin-Whitewater had posted a 40-0 record heading into the conference championship. Highland earned its spot in the title match by edging No. 6 Wisconsin-La Crosse, 2-1.
On the women's side, Viterbo earned the top seed in the bracket, but the V-Hawks had to rally against No. 2 Minnesota State-Mankato in the finals to claim the win, 3-2. Viterbo found itself down 2-1 after Game 3 but recorded wins of 182-157 and 203-156 to wrap up the title.
Viterbo knocked off No. 6 Wisconsin-Madison in the semifinal, 2-1, and Minnesota State-Mankato used a 158-157 win in the deciding game to advance past No. 4 Highland, 2-1.
Prior to the championship bracket, the fourth and final GLBC match was contested, featuring six traditional games and four four-game Baker sets. The Wisconsin-Whitewater men and Viterbo women led their divisions in total pinfall, posting 10-0 and 9-1 records, respectively.
In the men's individual standings, Wisconsin-Madison's Sam Kivimaki edged Wisconsin-Whitewater's Chris Wiley by a single pin for the top spot, finishing his six-game block with a 1,355 total, a 225.83 average. Western Illinois' Brad Behrends was third with 1,340, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Matt Hibbard, Wisconsin-Whitewater's David Eggert and Western Illinois' Kyle Rognstad tied for fourth with 1,325.
Viterbo's Kaley Brault and Hanna Jirsa claimed the top two spots on the women's side, posting scores of 1,140 and 1,116, respectively. Minnesota State-Mankato's Andrea Staples was third with 1,099, while Wisconsin-Platteville's Haley Anneier (1,087) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Skyler Malcolm (1,067) rounded out the top five.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Golden Bear Classic in Reading, Pennsylvania, the Duquesne women recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the title match against top-seeded Adelphi to claim a 4-3 victory, which included a 185-184 win in the final game.
- At the Crusader Classic in Indianapolis, the Nebraska women posted the highest pinfall total on the way to a 12-0 record for the weekend.
- At the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Fayetteville State women outdistanced the field to finish with a 14-1 record.
- At the Suffolk Tournament in Babylon, New York, the Suffolk men and Molloy women rolled to big victories.
- At the Tony Reyes Classic in San Jose, California, the San Jose State men cruised to the top spot.
