Collegiate Ticker - Feb. 19, 2025

The Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, the final Tier I event of the season, helped to close out the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate regular season this past weekend, with teams now turning their attention to the postseason.

In Indianapolis, 78 men’s varsity teams and 65 women’s varsity teams completed five individual games and 15 Baker games before the top eight in each division advanced to a best-of-three Baker bracket.

The top eight men’s teams in qualifying order were Webber International, Mount Mercy, Wichita State, Muskingum, Concordia, Newman, McKendree and Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah.

An opening round upset of No. 1 Webber by No. 8 SCAD-Savannah set the tone early, with No. 3 Wichita State also falling to No. 6 Newman. No. 2 Mount Mercy and No. 4 Muskingum avoided upsets and advanced to the semifinals. SCAD-Savannah continued to win, knocking off Muskingum to set up a final match with Mount Mercy.

The title match was best of five, and it went the distance as SCAD-Savannah knocked off the Mount Mercy for their first win at the Hoosier Classic win.

A pair of Mount Mercy teammates took the top two spots in the individual standings. Keegan Alexander led with a five-game total of 1,193, while Zach Andresen was right behind at 1,183. Webber’s Brett Lloyd fired a 300 in Game 4 on his way to placing third at 1,175. Wichita State’s Brandon Bonta (1,173) and Muskingum’s Evan Thro (1,170) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively. McKendree’s Darren Zombro also had a 300 in Game 3.

The women’s bracket, in order of qualifying position, included SCAD-Savannah, Calumet, Milligan, Mount Mercy, Pikeville, Judson, Lindenwood and Oklahoma Christian.

No. 1 SCAD-Savannah defeated No. 8 Oklahoma Christian, No. 4 Mount Mercy defeated No. 5 Pikeville, No. 2 Calumet took down No. 7 Lindenwood, with lone upset delivered by No. 6 Judson beating out No. 3 Milligan. The underdog story continued for Judson as they defeated Calumet, advancing to the best-of-five finals against SCAD-Savannah.

Just like the men’s title match, Judson and SCAD-Savannah went the full five games. Judson came out on top for the women’s title at the Hoosier Classic.

Calumet’s Piper Plautz had the highest five-game total for the weekend during the individual block with 1,198, good for nearly a 240 average, while SCAD-Savannah’s Yumi Yuzuriha was second with 1,160. Culver-Stockton’s Rachel Moore placed third with 1,136, St. Francis-Illinois’ Allison Nape was fourth with 1,121 and Milligan’s Emily Cheesman closed out the top five with 1,111.
