Collegiate Ticker - Jan. 22, 2025
January 22, 2025
Less than three months remain in the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season, and this past weekend saw nine events contested, including a Tier I competition – the Kegel-ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic in Addison, Illinois.
Teams in attendance bowled five individual games and 16 Baker games, with total pinfall determining which of the 56 men’s varsity teams and 50 women’s varsity teams would claim the Tier I victory.
In the men’s field, Mount Mercy started and stayed hot during the individual block, finishing with 5,701 (a 228 team average) and continued their dominant performance during the Baker games. The Mustangs finished with a grand total of 9,276, winning the event by nearly 170 pins over second-place Lawrence Tech.
Purdue’s Gabe Castro led all men with a five-game total of 1,231, averaging over 246, while Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah’s Christian Liquori ended in second with 1,221. Mount Mercy’s Blake Walsh was third with 1,204, Aquinas’ Tony DeLuccia finished fourth at 1,178 and Belmont Abbey’s Jordan Woods rounded out the top five with 1,177.
It was a similar story for the Mount Mercy women, who won their side of the field with a strong performance despite a furious comeback attempt by St. Francis-Illinois. St. Francis-Illinois had the highest Baker set in the women’s field with 3,413 and finished in second overall, just 61 pins behind the Mustangs (8,003-7,942).
The win marked Mount Mercy’s second Tier I victory of the season. The women’s squad also claimed the top spot at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational in December.
Viterbo’s Emily Newbauer led all women with 1,114, while Rock Valley’s Madison Davenport was second with 1,089. SCAD-Savannah’s Raina Davis was third with 1,081, Emmanuel’s Danielle Fendenheim placed fourth with 1,074 and Judson’s Karlea Ceasario took fifth with 1,073.
In other collegiate action:
- In Glendale, Arizona, the 14th Annual Devil’s Duel and Antelope Shoot Out were held, and the Arizona State men swept both events.
- At the two-day Columbia Cougar Clash in Columbia, Missouri, Day 1 saw the Avila men and women win. Day 2 had the Southeastern men and Culver-Stockton women ending the weekend with victories.
- At the Division III All Region Invite in Lansing, Michigan, the Aurora women took home the victory after going 6-2 in matches.
- At the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (SWIBC) events V and VI in Plano, Texas, the Newman men and women swept the weekend.
