Collegiate Ticker - Nov. 6, 2024

The 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season saw 13 events contested across the country last weekend, including a Tier I event – the Bowlero Southern Classic in Marietta, Georgia.

Twenty-two men’s varsity teams and 17 women’s varsity teams competed for the Tier I title, where six individual games and 20 Baker games were bowled over two days. Total pinfall determined the winner in each division.

Both the Pikeville women and Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah men used strong starts in individuals and consistent sets in Bakers to win the tournament. The SCAD-Savannah men had the highest individual game across the tournament with 1,201 in Game 4.

The SCAD-Savannah men also had two players in the top five for individuals: Aidan Furukawa in second with 1,403 and Julian Salinas in fifth with 1,360. Webber International’s Brandon Bohn led all men with 1,413, while SUNY-Stony Brook’s Kyle Perillo (1,375) and Marian-Indiana’s Maxwell Berche (1,366) placed third and fourth, respectively. Huntington’s Dale Horstmann had the tournament’s only perfect game to end the individual block.

On the women’s side, Pikeville’s Brianna Rogers led the way with a 1,356 total, while teammate Kelsey Cummings was fifth with 1,244. Milligan’s Emily Cheesman was second with 1,300, while SCAD-Savannah teammates Lara Kurt (1,274) and Yumi Yuzuriha (1,268) were third and fourth, respectively.

In other collegiate action:

- At the American Heartland Bowling Association (AHBA) Event 3 in Sandusky, Ohio, the Davenport men and women left with conference victories.

- At the Big Ole Open in Alexandria, Minnesota, the Wartburg men and Coe women had dominant performances to win.

- At the Bronco Open in Hastings, Nebraska, the Iowa Western CC men won by nearly 300 pins while the Hastings women had a narrow win by less than 30 pins.

- At the Muskie Mash in Coshocton, Ohio, the Robert Morris-Pennsylvania men and Walsh women left with wins.

- At the Titan Invitational in Appleton, Wisconsin, the Marian-Wisconsin men and women won with match-play bracket victories.

- At the Track Kat Klash in Houston, the Sam Houston State women defeated Arkansas State in the title match to win in seven games.

- At the Niagara University Brunswick Fall Open in Kenmore, New York, the Merrimack women defeated Niagara in six games during the championship match to win.

- At the Lions Match Play Classic in St. Charles, Missouri, the Lindenwood men and women made it through the bracket to come out on top, with the men capping the victory with a Baker 300.

- At the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Great Lakes Open in Clinton Township, Michigan, the Lawrence Tech men and Concordia women left with conference wins.

- At the SLOtown Showdown Events 1 and 2 in Santa Maria, California, the Arizona State men won the first event while the California State-Fresno men took the win in the second event.

Another 14 events are on deck this upcoming weekend, including one of the biggest Tier II events with the Leatherneck Classic taking place in Rockford, Illinois.
