Collegiate Ticker - Oct. 16, 2024

The 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season continued last week with six tournaments, highlighted by the Western Shootout in Indianapolis.

The Western Shootout saw 31 men’s varsity teams and 23 women’s varsity teams shoe up for six individual games and 16 Baker games, with total pinfall determining the winner.

After all was said and done, the Trine men and women left Indianapolis with wins. The men started with 6,699 in individuals before shooting the highest Baker total (3,516) to win by over 300 pins. The women’s team also started strong with a 6,175 total in individuals and added 3,137 in Baker competition to hold off Calumet, who fell short despite posting the high Baker total of 3,233.

In individuals on the men’s side, Purdue’s Gabe Castro led the field with a 1,513 total, good for a 252.16 average, while teammate Lucas Francis placed fifth with 1,406. Trine teammates Hayden Hale (1,432), Blake Attig (1,431) and Zackary Sisk (1,414) placed second through fourth, respectively. Calumet’s Nick Dudeck achieved perfection in Game 5 for the tournament’s only perfect game.

The women’s field saw Rochester’s Sara Ritchie lead the way with an individual total of 1,336, followed closely by Midway’s Maegan Coleman at 1,321. William Woods teammates Hailey Triske (1,288) and Trista Rauma (1,282) placed third and fourth, respectively, while Trine’s Megan Timm rounded out the top five with 1,273.

In other collegiate action:

- At the Bud Whitman Memorial in New Castle, Delaware, the Fairleigh Dickinson women took down Sacred Heart in six games during the title match to win.

- At the Great Lakes Valley Conference Event 1 in Schofield, Wisconsin, the Rock Valley men and Marian-Wisconsin women left with conference victories. Rock Valley’s Justin Curtis had a 300 game to start the event.

- At the Grapevine Classic in Erie, Pennsylvania, the Daemen women went 9-1 in matches to win.

- At the Mid Iowa Bowling Conference Event 1 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Coe men and women swept the tournament. Hawkeye CC’s Ryder Fleming had a perfect game in Game 3 of individuals.

- At the Penguin Classic in Struthers, Ohio, the Nebraska women defeated Wichita State in the championship match, 4-0, for their first tournament win of the year.

Next weekend will be jam-packed as 11 events are on deck, including the Mid States Championships in Wichita, Kansas, as the next Tier I event.
