Saint Xavier recorded a pair of bracket wins to sweep the women’s and men’s varsity divisions last weekend at the Hammer Golden Eagle Invite in Rockford, Illinois.

The event featured 14 women’s teams for varsity competition, while 23 varsity squads hit the lanes in the men’s division. Qualifying featured five traditional games and 16 Baker games. Four teams advanced to bracket play in the women’s division, while eight teams made their way to the bracket on the men’s side.

Rounds leading up to the finals were contested in a best-of-three Baker format, while the championship match in each division expanded to best-of-five competition.

In the women’s division, Saint Xavier cruised to the top spot in qualifying by 292 pins, finishing with 7,940. Judson (7,648), Calumet (7,581) and Governors State (7,394) joined the Cougars in the next round.

Saint Xavier (2-0 over Governors State) and Calumet (2-0 over Judson) advanced out of the semifinals, and the Cougars topped the Crimson Wave in the championship round, 3.5-0.5.

Saint Xavier’s Jade Gabor posted the top individual performance in the women’s division, rolling games of 192, 225, 235, 203 and 241 for a 1,096 total (219.2 average). Judson’s Paige Carpenter (1,077) and Chloe Siezega (1,068) placed second and third, respectively. St. Ambrose’s Marissa Bills (1,045) and Saint Xavier’s Monica Darrow (1,021) rounded out the top five.

On the men’s side, Saint Xavier averaged more than 220 as a team across qualifying to claim the top seed for the bracket with a 9,027 total. Calumet was second with 8,889, while Wisconsin-Whitewater (8,797), St. Ambrose (8,706), Quincy (8,661), Marian-Wisconsin (8,478), Purdue (8,460) and Rock Valley (8,263) also earned trips to the bracket.

The Cougars posted a pair of 2-1 wins over No. 8 Rock Valley and No. 4 St. Ambrose to advance to the finals, while Purdue made its way to the championship match as the No. 7 seed. The Boilermakers bested No. 2 Calumet (2.5-1.5) and No. 3 Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) along the way.

The finals went to the deciding game, with Saint Xavier securing the title over Purdue in Game 5 (209-174) for a 3-2 victory.

Edgar Burgos of Saint Xavier averaged more than 257 for his five traditional games to lead the men’s field with a 1,286 total. Burgos had games of 279, 237, 238, 276 and 256.

St. Ambrose’s Joshua Prowse was next in the standings with 1,221. Marian-Wisconsin’s Tommy Reboletti (1,172), St. Ambrose’s Kendric Siders (1,170) and Calumet’s Alex Linnenbrink (1,152) also posted top-five finishes.

The first of four regular-season events for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) also took place over the weekend with the Jackson Open contested in Jackson, Michigan.

The women’s field featured 13 varsity teams, while 14 varsity squads competed in the men’s division. The one-day event featured three traditional games and 16 Baker games, with total pinfall determining the winners in each division.

Concordia claimed the top spot in the women’s division on the strength of a strong team effort during their Baker set, averaging more than 203 across 16 games. The Cardinals quickly overcame the 102-pin deficit they faced against Indiana Tech after the traditional block to roll to the victory with a 5,932 total.

Indiana Tech placed second with 5,718, and Spring Arbor was third with 5,563.

Concordia’s Arielle Oakley posted the top three-game score on the women’s side, rolling games of 183, 221 and 212 for a 616 total. Lawrence Tech’s Rachel Iha followed with 605, while Siena Heights’ Paige Westergaard (592), Bryanna Battles of St. Francis-Illinois (590) and Indiana Tech’s Leah Brazier (587) also finished in the top five.

In the men’s division, Lawrence Tech recorded a wire-to-wire win with a final tally of 6,287. The Blue Devils averaged more than 208 during the traditional block and finished 412 pins ahead of Spring Arbor (5,875). Concordia placed third with 5,869.

The top two spots in the men’s individual standings also went to student-athletes from Lawrence Tech. Noah Samuels led the field with games of 239, 225 and 213 for a 677 series, while Connor Nowak finished with 643.

Cleary’s Howard Hammond (638), Spring Arbor’s Owen Williams (637) and Christopher Bald of St. Francis-Illinois (636) also placed in the top five.

Business picks up in the collegiate realm this weekend, with nine events on the schedule. The first Tier I event for the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season also will take place in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, at the Midwest Collegiate Championships.
