Competition delayed at World Cup

TOULON, France - Structural problems with the roof at Bowling de Provence forced the cancelation of most of the day's bowling Tuesday at the 2010 QubicaAMF World Cup.

After the conclusion of the opening day's squad, concrete dust was found on and around lane 29. Upon further inspection, crews determined the support beam above that lane had cracked. Engineers and architects would only sign off on letting the organizers use 16 lanes, which was deemed not enough to continue the day's bowling.

As a result, competition has been pushed back and qualifying will now only be 15 games instead of 20 games. The men's squad that competed Tuesday morning will not compete Wednesday. The other three squads, one men's and two women's, will complete their second round of qualifying Wednesday. Round 3 will be contested Thursday with all bowlers competing. Team USA's John Szczerbinski and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard are both scheduled to complete Round 2 on Wednesday.

After 15 games, the top 24 men and top 24 women will advance to eight additional qualifying games on Friday. The top eight men and top eight women will then advance to round robin match play Friday evening when the field will be paired down to the top three men and top three women for the semifinals and finals. All rounds are being broadcast live on BOWL.com.

The World Cup is the largest international bowling tournament in the world in terms of the number of countries competing. This year 93 countries are competing with 92 men in the field and 76 women.
