Defending champ Hammel undefeated
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Char Hammel of Las Vegas, the defending champion at the USBC Senior Queens, is following a path similar to last year's event in El Paso, Texas, and she's getting more and more comfortable with each successful round.
Hammel is one of eight undefeated players remaining in the winners bracket after victories against three-time Senior Queens winner Sandra Postma of Lansing, Ill. (643-587) and Roberta Havholm of Dayton, Ohio (665-617).
"As usual, I started out a little slow, but I'm definitely more focused and much more comfortable as we get farther into match play," said Hammel, who defeated defending champion Janine Primrose of Gardnerville, Nev., twice to capture the 2010 title. "I'm happy to have the two wins and be done for the day so I can get some rest and ice my hand. I'm on similar path to last year, and I feel pretty good overall."
Among those joining Hammel in the winners bracket are 2007 Senior Queens champion Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., first-round leader and first-time participant Cynthia Johnson of Bowie, Md., and second-round leader Patti Schultz of Braidwood, Ill. Hammel and Schultz will go head-to-head Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. EDT.
The championship match of the Senior Queens will be live streamed on BOWL.com on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. EDT. With the double-elimination format, the bowler coming from the contenders bracket will have to win two three-game total-pinfall matches to earn the title. The 2011 Senior Queens champion will receive $3,500.
