Defending champion Kulick takes USWO lead

EULESS, Texas - Defending champion Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., re-established herself as the player to beat at the 2011 Bowling's U.S. Women's Open on Monday, firing a massive eight-game total to move into the overall lead.

The Team USA member averaged better than 262 a game Monday in taking the overall lead after 24 games with 5,920, a 246.67 average. She had an eight-game total of 2,100 in the third round at AMF Euless Lanes.

"Knowing I get to bowl on the fresh oil again tomorrow puts a huge smile on my face," said Kulick, who shot her big total on the first squad of the day Monday. "I'm just going to try and get as far ahead as possible to put myself into position to make the TV show."

Kulick topped a field of 286 of the top amateur and professional bowlers in the world to take the lead and will be joined by the rest of the top 32 players in the field for an additional eight games of qualifying Tuesday morning.

"I want to keep going strong so I can make a run at the $50,000 first-place prize and maybe even that $1 million for bowling 300 in the championship match," said Kulick, the 2003 and 2010 U.S. Women's Open champion. "There have been quite a few 300 games so far, but I haven't shot mine yet. I'm saving it."

Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio, the second-round leader, sits in second place with 5,808, an average of 242 per game. She's followed by Shannon O'Keefe of Arlington, Texas, with 5,663.

It took an average of 222.71 to make the first cut to the top 32. Joline Persson-Planefors of Sweden earned the final spot with a 24-game total of 5,345.

After the top 32 complete their final eight games of qualifying Tuesday morning, the field will be cut to the top 16 for 16 games of round robin match play, which begins Tuesday night. The remaining five bowlers will move on to the finals at Cowboys Stadium on Thursday night.

The finals of the U.S. Women's Open will be broadcast on Saturday, July 2 at 6 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. If a bowler throws a 300 game in the championship match, she will win $1 million. The champion will earn $50,000.

The 2011 U.S. Women's Open has already broken one record with 286 participants, which tops the previous record of 267 set in 2003. A total of 17 countries are represented in the field.
