Denmark leads trios at 2014 World Men's Championships
December 10, 2014
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - By the end of the first game of trios qualifying at the 2014 World Bowling Men's Championships in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, the bowlers from Denmark had the bowling center buzzing with talk of a trios record.
Although Frederik Nicolai Ohrgaard, Carsten Warming Hansen and Thomas Larsen did not find their way into the record book, they did manage to separate themselves from the rest of the field halfway through the six games of trios qualifying.
The three started the day with a 732 effort and added games of 686 and 740 for a 2,158 total on the 43-foot Tokyo pattern, just missing the trios game (778) and three-game series (2,196) records.
Larsen led the way with a 725 set and was followed by Ohrgaard (718) and Hansen (715).
This week's singles gold medalist Dan MacLelland of Canada led his team into second place with a 2,079 total, just one pin ahead of Sweden's 2,078. Team USA's Mike Fagan, Marshall Kent and Sean Rash finished with a 749 game to end the day in fourth place with 2,038.
Trios qualifying continues Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. local time in Abu Dhabi (Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time) with three games on the 38-foot Atlanta oil pattern.
After all 272 bowlers, representing 49 countries, have completed their six games of qualifying, the field will be cut to the top four for the semifinals, which will begin at 10:15 a.m. EDT.
The higher seed in each match will get to choose the lane condition for that game. The two semifinal winners will advance to the gold-medal match, and the losers each will earn bronze medals.
The nine-day World Men's Championships runs through Dec. 14 as bowlers compete for medals in six events - singles, doubles, trios, team, all-events and Masters match play.
Singles featured the Tokyo lane condition, doubles was contested on Atlanta and trios and team both will include three games on each pattern. Each event includes six games of qualifying before the field is narrowed to the top four for the semifinals.
Korea's Park Jongwoo and Choi Bokeum won doubles Tuesday.
The 2014 World Men's Championships marks the event's first visit to Abu Dhabi since 1999.
All rounds of the event will be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. For a complete schedule in Eastern time, visit BOWL.com/LiveStream.
