EJ Tackett connects for perfect game at 2025 USBC Open Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. – Scores soared high Wednesday night at the Raising Cane’s River Center as Professional Bowlers Association Tour champion EJ Tackett rolled a 300 game at the 2025 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, becoming one of 46 bowlers to achieve both a 300 game and an 800 series at the event.

Tackett, of Ossian, Indiana, started slowly in doubles, posting a 606 series. He bounced back in singles with games of 228, 247 and 300, finishing with a 775 series.

Following the performance, Tackett reflected on this milestone.

“I’ve been bowling the Open for many years. My first year was right here in Baton Rouge back in 2012,” Tackett said. “It’s fitting that I finally bowl a 300 here.”

Tackett previously recorded an 802 series during doubles at the 2022 USBC Open Championships in Las Vegas. This year, he shared the moment with friends and family, bringing more than 10 teams to compete.

“For me, bowling a 300 in the Open Championships currently holds a little bit more weight than a PBA one,” he said. "At the Open Championships, you only get nine games at it every year. So to finally be able to bowl one in this environment, it is pretty special.”

Despite the perfect game, Tackett fell short of claiming the tournament lead. He currently sits in eighth in Regular Singles and 39th in Regular All-Events with 2,033.

Two-time Eagle winner Marc McDowell of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, leads singles with 795, and former Team USA member Cassidy Schaub of Ashland, Ohio, holds the top spot in all-events with 2,158.

“It wasn’t for lack of good shots. I just could not get 10,” he said. “In the first game of singles, it was ring 10 after ring 10.”

The second game brought more of the same, including a blower 7 pin and three more ring 10s.

“I threw the shots to be able to take over the lead,” Tackett said. “The pins just did not cooperate enough.”

Tackett’s résumé on the PBA Tour is nothing short of remarkable. In his 13-year career, he has amassed 27 national titles, including seven major championships. He is also one of only nine bowlers to complete the PBA Triple Crown, having won the World Championship, the Tournament of Champions and the U.S. Open.

As the 2025 PBA Tour season winds down, Tackett remains a front-runner for the Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year award which he has won three times in his career (2016, 2023, 2024).

With this year’s tournament expected to draw more than 58,000 competitors, Tackett’s milestone is not just another accolade—it’s a timeless moment etched into the history of the sport.
