TOPEKA, Kan.
– Eleven competitors advanced out of Thursday’s pre-tournament qualifier for the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Go Bowling Topeka Open contested at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka, Kansas.

Right-hander Gillian Lim out of Malaysia led the way with games of 221, 201, 249, 219, 241 and 199 for a six-game total of 1,330 to make the main field in her first PWBA event. National teammate Natasha Roslan followed closely behind in second with 1,326.

Sweden’s Nora Johansson was third with 1,310 while Singapore’s Arianne Tay (1,290) and Puerto Rico’s Estefania Cobo (1,287) round out the top five, respectively.

Joining those already mentioned into the tournament proper will be Finland’s Peppi Konsteri (1,278), Sweden’s Anna Andersson (1,261), Brooke Roberts of Port Orange, Florida (1,250), Anna Antony of Farmington, Connecticut (1,248), Canada’s Sarah Klassen (1,243) and Madison Janack of Wichita, Kansas (1,224).

Lim joined other members of Team Malaysia stateside to try out the tour and wasn’t expecting to lead the PTQ in her first attempt.

“It’s amazing,” said Lim. “I didn’t really think I could do it but the lanes were nice today as well as when they started breaking down.”

Lim had a few nerves to calm in her opening games, where she had to switch her mindset from what she had been accustomed to from international competition to the PWBA.

“For me, seeing some different people and figuring out the double-jump lane courtesy was confusing at first,” she said.

She leaned on those from those on Team Malaysia, who also gave her some advice before the event.

“They said there was no pressure and to just bowl like how we train back home,” said Lim, mentioning that back in Malaysia, the national team practices Monday through Friday and goes to the gym every other day.

That intensive training paid off for Lim today as she averaged over 223 to advance into her first PWBA event as she looks to try and make her own mark on the tour.

Lim and 74 other competitors will hit the lanes Friday morning at 11 a.m. Eastern for the first of two six-game qualifying blocks, after which a cut will be made to the top third of the field.

Those bowlers will participate in a third round of qualifying on Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. Eastern. After 18 games, the top 12 bowlers will take part in a final six-game block to determine the top five for the stepladder finals, which will be contested on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
