Florida bowler shoots 803 at 2011 OC
June 06, 2011
RENO, Nev. - Michael Moore of Orlando, Fla., flirted with a spot in the USBC Open Championships record books when he rolled a 297 game during the 2009 event in Las Vegas, and two years later, he finally solidified his place in history with an 802 series on the championship lanes Saturday.
While many bowling fans, and USBC's live stream cameras, crowded behind lanes 9 and 10 to watch 13-time Team USA member Diandra Asbaty and her talented teammates make their run at Open Championships glory, Moore quietly was striking away at the other end of the National Bowling Stadium.
This year, the 23-year-old right-hander fired games of 279, 268 and 255 and registered the record-breaking 11th 800 series of the 2011 Open Championships, which marked the most in a single tournament. There have been 10 800s on three occasions (1991, 1996 and 2002), and a total of 21 in six previous visits to the Stadium.
Along with accomplishing a lifelong goal, Moore helped his team to a 3,141 total. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison, Wis., leads Regular Team with 3,473.
"It is a major goal in my life," said Moore, who is the manager at Lighting Strikes Pro Shop. "Two years ago, I shot 297 in team. I had the front 11 and got a little nervous. I felt like I lost an opportunity that doesn't come around very often. Now, a couple years later, I was able to accomplish another goal."
Moore had a great feel for the lanes after he and his teammate, Shawn Naumann, developed a game plan for their team event. Then, of course, the main goal was to help the rest of the team stick to the plan.
"Shawn and I came up with a game plan," said Moore, who bowls league at Orlando's Colonial Lanes. "We told everybody to play in the same area. We were able to open the lanes up and create a very playable pattern. I executed very well and got lucky. You don't shoot 800 by just throwing it good, you have to get lucky. But, you create your own luck at the same time."
Now that he's found his place in the record books, Moore already is looking forward to hearing his name called at next year's Open Championships in Baton Rouge, La.
"That is going to be one of my favorite things about coming back," said Moore, who was the 2008-09 Professional Bowlers Association South Region Rookie of the Year. "It's not as a cocky statement, or me saying I'm better than someone else, it's just an honor to accomplish something and have it recognized for the rest of my Open Championships career."
Moore added 758 in singles and 585 in doubles for a 2,145 all-events total, which is good for 15th place in Regular All-Events. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads with 2,268.
