Hanson, Falk lead Team USA Trials

RESULTS: Round 1 men | Round 1 women

HENDERSON, Nev. -
Craig Hanson of Orlando, Fla., and Amanda Falk of Tucson, Ariz., took the lead after the opening round Tuesday at the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials.

Hanson topped the men's field with a nine-game block of 2,117, an average of 235.22, while Falk shot 2,024 for her nine games, an average of 224.88, at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center in suburban Las Vegas.

The 20-year-old Hanson leads Professional Bowlers Association exempt player Mike Fagan of Patchogue, N.Y., by 62 pins. John Janawicz of Winter Haven, Fla., is third with 2,033.

"I used one ball all day and it just matched up really well," Hanson said. "I finished strong with a 278 game, but I missed the transition in games seven and eight and shot 200 and 207. I put a lot of emphasis on lane play, so when I miss a transition it bothers me. But overall I matched up really well today."

Falk, 23, who bowls collegiately at Central Missouri, leads Kaidee Sutphin of Orlando, Fla., by 28 pins. Maggie Zakrzewski of Wichita, Kan., who won the USBC Junior Gold Championships in July, is third with 1,939.

"I just stayed calm and didn't let my misses bother me," the left-handed Falk said. "The first three games I bowled well, then I went some transition and my last three games were really big. It was like a sandwich."

Competition continues Wednesday with the second of four nine-game blocks. The top three men and top three women finishers after 36 games will earn automatic spots on Team USA, while the National Selection Committee will pick two additional men and two additional women to join the team.

The top two male and top two female competitors who are 20 years old or younger before Jan. 1, 2010 will earn automatic spots on Junior Team USA 2010. The National Selection Committee will select two additional boys and two additional girls to join the team. The National Selection Committee will select from players who either competed in the Team USA Trials or who advanced to the match-play portion of the USBC Junior Gold Championships, which were held in July in Indianapolis.
