Henderson, Nev., awarded 2013 World Championships
December 15, 2010
The city of Henderson, Nev., has been selected to host the 2013 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships, which will feature both men's and women's competition at the same venue for the first time since 2003.
The World Championships will be held at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center with tentative dates scheduled for Aug. 18-31, 2013 at the 72-lane venue in suburban Las Vegas.
Henderson beat out bids from two other cities to earn the event. The WTBA also looked at bids from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and Munich, Germany.
"I congratulate the city of Henderson whose bid shows that they have both the vision and capacity to organize a fantastic event in 2013 and raise the World Bowling Championships to new standards," WTBA president Kevin Dornberger said. "This is an important step toward our continual development as a global sport and our drive toward Olympic inclusion."
The United States Bowling Congress, which organized the 2009 WTBA World Women's Championships in Las Vegas, will offer its assistance in helping to run the 2013 World Championships.
"USBC is thrilled to have the best bowlers in the world be our guests in the United States for this prestigious event," USBC Executive Director Stu Upson said. "We look forward to supporting the host city of Henderson in making this an event that further elevates the sport of bowling on the global stage."
Strike Zone Bowling Center has previously hosted the USBC Team USA Trials and U.S. Women's Open. It is scheduled to host the USBC Junior Gold Championships in July.
"On behalf of Sunset Station, the Strike Zone Bowling Center and all of Station Casinos, we are extremely pleased with the WTBA's decision to award the World Championships to Henderson," Station Casinos Corporate Director of Bowling Sales David Garber said. "All of us involved will work to make this the best event for the athletes, delegations and participants."
The World Championships award medals in six disciplines - singles, doubles, trios, team, all-events and Masters. The 2010 World Men's Championships were held earlier this year in Munich, Germany, while the 2011 World Women's Championships are slated for Hong Kong. The World Championships will not be held in 2012.
