IBC Youth rolls out first step to national event

ARLINGTON, Texas - USA Bowling, the team-based youth program offered through the International Bowling Campus, will hold four regional events this fall as the first step toward a new USA Bowling National event.
USA Bowling is a mainstream competition model that was initiated to introduce youngsters to bowling. It follows the same structure as other youth sports by placing children on a team, providing each team with a coach and then having regular practices along with weekly competitions.
The new USA Bowling Regional events will provide additional opportunities for team competition. Starting with four events in 2013, USA Bowling will grow to eight regional events in 2014 and 16 events will be held in 2015. The 16 regional winners in 2015 will be invited to participate in the first USA Bowling National event in spring 2016.
While the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships will continue to be the national championships for singles competition, USA Bowling will become the premier event for team competition at the national level.
"We are excited to develop this new avenue of competition for youth teams," said Chad Murphy, International Bowling Campus Managing Director of Youth Development. "Most sports are positioned as an individual or team sport, where bowling provides both. This unique advantage can give bowling a leg up when competing for youth participation with other sports."
The dates and sites of the four regional events in 2013:
* East - Oct. 12-13, Rab's Country Lanes, Staten Island, N.Y.
* Midwest - Oct. 26-27, Northrock Lanes, Wichita, Kan.
* South - Nov. 2-3, Vestavia Bowl, Birmingham, Ala.
* West - Nov. 9-10, Irvine Lanes, Irvine, Calif.
At each regional event, there will be two divisions - for Under 12 (12 or younger as of July 31, 2013) and Under 15 (15 or younger as of July 31, 2013) teams - and each team will be comprised of four bowlers.
Teams will bowl a qualifying round (three games for U12, four games for U15) and then the field will be cut to the top eight teams that will take part in round-robin match play using the Baker format. After the seven games of match play, the top three teams will advance to the stepladder finals.
The cost to compete in a USA Bowling Regional event is $80 for U12 teams and $90 for U15 teams. All participants will receive an event t-shirt and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams.
Teams do not have to be a member of a USA Bowling league to compete in the events.
"All youth teams are encouraged to take part in a regional event," Murphy said. "For the cost, you won't find a more economical competition for our young athletes."
