Kansas bowlers dominate leaderboards at OC

RENO, Nev. - Joe Keltner of Wichita, Kan., turned in a career-best performance at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships this weekend and left the National Bowling Stadium as the leader in three events.

The 32-year-old right-hander put together sets of 736 in doubles, 735 in team and 683 in singles to secure the Regular All-Events lead with 2,154. Along the way, he and Chris Greene grabbed the lead in Regular Doubles with 1,403, and their effort lifted Team Tilt of Lawrence, Kan., into the top spot in Team All-Events with a 10,065 total.

TeamTilt2013_250x140Team Tilt, the 2008 Regular Team winner and Team All-Events runner-up, includes Thomas Ault Jr. (2,043), 2008 Regular All-Events titlist Jay Futrell (1,977), Greene (1,953) and Russ Wilson (1,938). They are the 34th team in USBC Open Championships history to eclipse the 10,000 pinfall mark.

Brandon Brilinski of Flint, Mich., previously held the Regular All-Events lead with 2,103, Ault and Scott How of Oregon City, Ore., were the doubles leaders at 1,351 and Towne and Country Lanes 1 of Hartland, Wis., previously owned the lead in Team All-Events with 9,766.

Team Tilt made a run at the team leaderboard Friday before eventually settling into fourth place with 3,326, so a Team All-Events title was their goal heading into doubles and singles Saturday. Breakpoint Pro Shop 2 of Sartell, Minn., leads Regular Team with 3,358.

"Our goal was Team All-Events," said Keltner, who made his 10th Open Championships appearance. "We came close in 2008, so we were all very hungry for it. Everybody matched up really well this week. After bowling team, I told everybody it didn't matter that we missed the lead, and that we needed to go for all-events. I just kept telling them to throw as many good shots as they could and that every pin counts."

GreeneKeltner2013_250x140The teammates pushed each other on the lanes all day Saturday. Ault and How took the doubles lead in the morning, and the rest of the group battled for it Saturday night. Wilson and Futrell finished with 1,396 and forced Keltner and Greene to perform in the final frame. Keltner struck out for 276 to ensure the lead, while Greene finished with a 226 for a 667 series.

"I did notice the number, and I just wanted to put up the best score I could," Keltner said. "I wasn't really too worried about beating them because they're my best friends, but I did know that if we punched out, we were going to end up taking them over."

Keltner credited some of his success on the lanes to drilling a new ball while on-site at the NBS. He found that the oil didn't transition as much as in year's past, and with the right equipment, he was able to take advantage of both oil patterns.

With three leads in hand, Keltner is enjoying sharing the moment with his teammates.

"It's pretty surreal," Keltner said. "The numbers seem pretty good right now, but there's a lot of bowling left to go, so I'm not holding out for anything. I just bowled the best that I could, but it would mean a whole lot if they held up. It's very humbling bowling with this group. They all bowl so awesome. We have such a good connection. We all bowled in college together, and it's so much more fun to bowl with everybody and have all 10 of us together."
