Kauble takes lead at Don Carter Open

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. –
Tim Kauble of Marion, Ohio, averaged 235.6 to take the first round lead in the PBA Senior Don Carter Memorial Open presented by Ebonite Sunday at Carter Family Bowl.

Kauble, trying for his second Senior Tour title, had a 1,414 pinfall total for six games, with games of 259, 192, 279, 255, 245 and 184 in the second tournament of the 2012 Senior Tour season.

“Except for the last game of the block, generally everything got easier as it went along,” said Kauble, whose first title came in the Lake County Indiana Golden Anniversary Championship in 2008. “I really didn’t have to make a lot of adjustments. I had the right ball and was able to keep a relaxed arm swing so I was having a lot of fun.”

EagleDaleInsideRight behind Kauble are PBA Hall of Famers Dale Eagle of Tavares, Fla., in second with 1,402, and Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in third with 1,393.

After a tough season in which Williams failed to make a PBA Tour TV finals appearance for the first time in 26 years, the all-time leader in Tour titles (47) was looking forward to the Senior Tour season as a fresh start.

“I was bowling so badly on the regular Tour I didn’t know how competitive I was going to be out here on the Senior Tour,” said Williams, who also owns two Senior Tour titles. “On Tour it’s been a case where I’m not seeing things the way I should over the course of the tournament and consequently I’m not making the right adjustments.”

“After one tournament it’s a little early but I’m getting off to a pretty good start,” said Williams. I finished fourth last week and my goal was to finish in the top 10 after the first round here so things are going pretty well so far.”

Six-game qualifying continues Monday and Tuesday after which the 106-player field will be cut to the top 32 who will advance to match play Wednesday morning. Round of 8 and championship rounds will get underway Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
