Kulick continues to lead at U.S. Women's Open

FORT WORTH, Texas - Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., continued to set the pace on Saturday during the second day of qualifying at the 2010 U.S. Women's Open, a United States Bowling Congress event.
Through 16 qualifying games at Cityview Lanes, Kulick has knocked down 3,594 pins, an average of 224.63, and leads second-place Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., by 84 pins.
"This tournament is not over by any means," Kulick said. "If I can just be smart, have the right ball surfaces match up pretty quick, then I think you'll see me on the show again. But, again, a long tournament, long format. I just hope to continue to ride the success."
Johnson had the top eight-game block on Saturday, 1,806 pins for a 225.75 average. She moved from eighth place to second.
"I felt like I was in a good zone for awhile," Johnson said. "I struggled a little bit the last few games. The transition hit me late instead hitting me in the middle of the block. But I hung in there ... fortunately I had a couple of big games in between."
Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, made one of the biggest moves of the day despite some difficulty in getting to the bowling center. She had the third-best block of the day (1,765; 220.63 average) to move from 28th place into a tie for seventh.
"It was crazy this morning," Barnes said. "We got stuck in traffic, it took us two hours to get here so I was a lunatic. We walked in with two minutes to spare before we started practice. I started off well in the beginning, but unfortunately slowed down the last couple of games."
Qualifying will continue Sunday with a final eight-game block before the field is cut to the top 24 for round-robin match play, which will consist of 24 total games Monday and Tuesday. All qualifying and match-play rounds will be broadcast live on BOWL.com.
After match play, the top five players after 48 games, including bonus pins, will advance to the championship round at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington for the live ESPN2-televised finals at 8 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 12.
