RENO, Nev. - Two-time Bowling's U.S. Women's Open champion Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., continued strong as she grabbed the second-round lead at the 2012 event Saturday.

The Team USA member averaged more than 232 in her six-game block Saturday to take hold of the top spot after 12 games with 2,824. Her Team USA teammate Stefanie Nation of Grand Prairie, Texas, sits in second with 2,807.

Kulick was able to take advantage of how the earlier squad broke down the lanes ahead of her and made the correct equipment selections on her way to the top of the leaderboard. After two solid sets, she said she's confident to come back to the National Bowling Stadium on Sunday and continue to perform at a high level.

"Watching the earlier squad today, it seemed the lanes hooked more in the middle," Kulick said. "The first squad was forced deeper inside faster, which opened up the lanes a lot quicker. My ball selection was right on. Physically, I feel like I threw the ball better tonight. The plan is to come in tomorrow and get as many pins as I can, execute like every frame is worth $40,000 and go from there."

Kulick owns the 2003 and 2010 U.S. Women's Open titles, and finished second at the 2011 event held at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The challenging oil pattern and format has played into her strengths.

"I really think the U.S. Women's Open pattern and format suits me," Kulick said. "I really like the longer formats. I know that if I have a bad game, I have a couple more to make up for it. It's conducive to my game and style."

Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, sits in third place at 2,779, while Yuka Tsuchiya of Japan is fourth with 2,766. Rounding out the Top 5 is Michelle Sterner of Niagara Falls, N.Y., with 2,765.

Jessica Baker of Wichita, Kan., recorded the first perfect game of the 2012 event during her second block Saturday. She is currently in 30th with a 2,629 total.

All 202 bowlers in the U.S. Women's Open field will return for the third six-game block Sunday. After 18 games of qualifying, the field will be cut to the top 50 for six additional games to determine the final 16 for round-robin match play.

The five players who remain at the top of the standings after 40 total games will advance to Wednesday's television finals, which will be broadcast July 3 at 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

SANDELIN CONTINUES PACE AT SENIOR U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN

USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., continued on her torrid pace as she distanced herself from the field at the Senior U.S. Women's Open on Saturday.

Sandelin holds the second-round lead with a 2,716 total for 12 games. Pamela Pancoast of Lomita, Calif., sits in second place with 2,575, while Robin Romeo of Newhall, Calif., is third with 2,550.

All 61 Senior U.S. Women's Open competitors will bowl 18 games of qualifying before the cut is made to the top 15 for six additional games. The top eight players will take part in round-robin match play to determine the finalists for the stepladder finals.
