Kulick rolling at U.S. Women's Open

RENO, Nev. - Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., finds herself just eight games away from making the finals at the 2012 Bowling's U.S. Women's Open as she continued her dominant performance at the National Bowling Stadium on Monday.

Kelly Kulick 2011 USWOFor the third straight day, Kulick is atop the standings after going 6-2 in match play to finish with a 32-game total of 7,689, more than 150 pins ahead of Missy Parkin of Lake Forest, Calif., who is at 7,537.

After struggling during the last six-game block of qualifying earlier in the day, the two-time U.S. Women's Open champion came into match play with a new outlook.

"I just hope I throw it as good tomorrow as I did tonight," Kulick said. "I really struggled in the earlier block. When I came back I had a new mentality and was really able to throw the ball very well tonight."

With the top seed for the finals in her sights, Kulick is ready to come in Wednesday and put herself in position to claim her third U.S. Women's Open crown.

"I'm going to come out and execute, play the lanes and not worry about what everyone else is doing," Kulick said. "It's really just about getting to Wednesday. From there it's a crapshoot. Take your favorite pair of dice, throw them down the table and see what happens."

Team USA's Shannon O'Keefe of Arlington, Texas, is in third with 7,509, Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, is fourth with 7,371 and Brenda Padilla of Mansfield, Texas, is fifth with 7,343.

Rocio Restrepo of Colombia rounded out the final cut to the top 16 by totaling 5,298 for 24 games (220.75 average).

The remaining 16 bowlers will return Tuesday afternoon for eight more games of round-robin match play before the top five is determined for Wednesday's television finals, which will be broadcast July 3 at 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

SANDELIN HOLDS TOP SEED FOR SENIOR U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN FINALS

USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., is in position for a wire-to-wire victory at the Senior U.S. Women's Open as she grabbed the top spot for the stepladder finals Monday.

Sandelin will need just one win to claim the title after leading every round of the inaugural running of the event. She will be joined by three other hall of famers in the finals. Robin Romeo of Newhall, Calif., is second with 6,959, Dana Miller-Mackie of Albuquerque, N.M., is in third with 6,929 and Jeanne Naccarato rounds out the field with 6,878.

"We're all hall of famers, we're all champions, so this tournament is wide open for anyone," Sandelin said. "It's going to come down to who can execute the shot in the critical moments. I'm just going to follow my pre-shot routine, make sure the ball feels good on my hand and just have some fun. To be the first-ever Senior U.S. Women's Open champion, no one can take that away."

Miller-Mackie will face off against Naccarato in the opening match, with the winner squaring off against Romeo. Sandelin will await the winner in the finals, with the champion claiming the $5,000 top prize.

Competition will kick off at 4 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday and will be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV
