League bowler knocks down 3.5 million pins
May 26, 2011
Paul Tamburrino Sr. of Youngstown, Ohio, recently reached a personal milestone in the sport of bowling, according to his own records, by knocking down more than 3.5 million pins in his 60-year bowling career.
He got the idea to track his progress after reading a bowling magazine, where a bowler stated he had knocked down 1 million pins. Upon reading that, Tamburrino began researching his own stats and put together scoresheets he had kept for more than 35 years.
To his credit, Tamburrino has four certified 300 games and his career-high series is 767. He says he has bowled more than 18,000 games competitively.
The right-hander also was instrumental in bringing bowling to Sandusky High School in Sandusky, Ohio, with help from his grandson in 2000. He coached there for seven years, winning five championships during that span.
The father of seven has passed on his passion for bowling to his children and grandchildren, and that includes participating in the USBC Open Championships, where Tamburrino has competed 19 times. He has knocked down 29,521 pins on the tournament lanes for a career average of 172.6. This year’s team included his sons, Paul Tamburrino Jr., Ryan and Steve.
