Lillard adds to career pinfall at USBC Open
March 28, 2013
RENO, Nev. - United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Bill Lillard Sr. of Houston already gets the longest introduction each year at the USBC Open Championships, and he's inching closer to adding one more accolade to his impressive resume.
The eight-time Open Championships titlist is the event's active pinfall leader and continued his quest for the top spot on the all-time list this week at the National Bowling Stadium.
Lillard made his 66th consecutive tournament appearance and shot 485 in team, 478 in doubles and 456 in singles for a 1,419 all-events total, bringing his career pinfall total to 121,434, an average of 198.4. He now needs just 2,336 pins to catch fellow hall of famer Joe Norris, who toppled 123,770 pins in a record-tying 71 visits to the Open Championships.
Lillard, who was joined on the lanes by his son Bill Lillard Jr., a 35-time tournament participant, now is tied for third place on the participation list with Les Berry of Wooster, Ohio, who last competed in 2009.
Syl Thiel of Lake City, Minn., is the event's active participation leader and recently competed for the 68th time.
