Linds Lakers 1 back on top

LindsLakers2011SumRENO, Nev. - For the second consecutive year, Linds Lakers 1 of Minneapolis walked out of the National Bowling Stadium with the lead in Team All-Events at the USBC Open Championships.

Last year, the team's time on top was short, and the accomplished teammates went on to finish in second place, 97 pins short of their third Team All-Events title since 2002. They also came up short in team with another runner-up finish.

Luke Voaklander, the only member of the team who was not on the roster during the 2002 and 2006 title runs, led the way this year with a 2,093 all-events total, which included a 300 game that was broadcast live on BOWL.com on Friday night.

The 31-year-old right-hander helped the group to a 10,076 total, marking the 27th time in 108 years of Open Championships history that a team has eclipsed the 10,000 mark. Linds Lakers 1 also accomplished the feat in 2002 (10,339) and 2010 (10,187). Linds Cedarvale 2 of Eagan, Minn., led by 2010 Regular All-Events champion Matt McNiel, previously held the lead this year with 10,027.

Voaklander was followed by Gary Green (2,032), John Eiss (2,015), Sam Lantto (2,000) and Charles Vashaw (1,936). The original fifth member of the title-winning team is USBC Hall of Famer Todd Savoy, who chose to bowl with his family this year instead.

"Each time is different," said Eiss, who made his 38th Open Championships appearance. "Each time has its own special things. My daughter bowled with us this year on the other team, and we bowled doubles together, so she got to experience things on a personal level, and that was really neat. We also aren't getting any younger. Every time we bowl, we think this might be our last chance, and we thought that last year. We just missed out on the team event, and that one hurt the most."

The teammates are great friends on and off the lanes and use their closeness to their advantage as they navigate the challenging tournament lane condition each year.

"All 10 guys work on the shot and work on each other's games, and everybody has to cooperate in order for us to succeed," Eiss said. "In my opinion, you can't let one bowler be the star if you're going to be team champions. I think it's hard to do that, and that's what we take pride in. We try to make sure everybody has a shot. Sometimes that means some guys have to throw shiny, some guys throw dull, some guys throw less hook and some guys throw more."

The team's success may not have been possible without team captain, Thomas Corbett. Corbett, who is a member of Linds Lakers 2, has handled the team captain responsibilities for more than 20 years. If Linds Lakers 1 goes on to win, Corbett will celebrate with everyone else.

"He is the man," said Eiss, who is the proprietor of Country Club Lanes. "As far as organizing things goes, he sets up the lineups, knows who's going to be on what team, and he handles all the details. He deserves a lot of credit for everything he has done over the years. Everyone respects him and his decisions, and we haven't had any problems."

Linds Lakers 2 finished with a 3,207 team total Friday and a 9,245 Team All-Events total Saturday. Corbett led the way with 1,937 and was followed by Jason Smith (1,901), Scott Sodergren (1,838), Lisa Noor (1,797) and David Hoppenrath (1,772).
