Local bowler breaks through for first 300 at 2022 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS - Shooting 300 at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships is not an accomplishment that many people get to list on their bowling resumes.

Typically, those who can boast of a 300 at the USBC Open Championships are bowlers who have shot multiple perfect games during league and local tournaments long before ever achieving perfection on the championship lanes.

But Steven Brozek of Las Vegas is not a typical bowler, so instead of collecting a 300 or two in league before making his first run at perfection at the Open Championships, Brozek just decided to take care of both at the same time.

The 32-year-old right-hander rolled the first 300 of his bowling career during Game 3 of team at the South Point Bowling Plaza on Sunday.

"This just feels amazing," Brozek said. "I've had a couple 297s during league, but I was definitely a lot more nervous going up in the 10th frame here."

Brozek attempted to combat the 10th-frame nerves by taking very little time on the approach for each shot. However, his teammates had to step in and remind him not to get going too fast.

"I just sort of decided to get it and go on the first shot, but I'm not even sure my fingers were in the grips by the time I got to the line to deliver it," Brozek said. "That's when my teammates slowed me down and told me to take my time a little bit more. That really helped me, so they deserve a big shout out for that."

Brozek's 300 was the 47th of the 2022 Open Championships. It helped him get to 674 for the set and pushed Who is Brian Team 2 of Las Vegas to a 2,746 total in Standard Team.

The Standard Division is for teams with a combined average between 776 and 875.

The 674 set is a new Open Championships career high for Brozek, and it helped him post a new personal best for all-events as well. He added 541 in singles and 495 in doubles for a 1,710 total in his fourth tournament appearance.

Before he turned the page to doubles and singles, however, Brozek was sure to appreciate the incredible accomplishment he pulled off during team and the special people he got to share it with.

"This is the first time my girlfriend has seen me bowl the Open Championships, and my mom came down today as well, so they both got to see the 300, which was pretty awesome," Brozek said. "My teammates were just incredible, too. They got me relaxed and made it feel like we were just doing what we normally do. That allowed me to just have fun, and it worked out well."

Brozek planned to show his appreciation for his teammates and loved ones while celebrating the 300 with the group Sunday night.

"The Open Championships is just a great tournament that I love coming to, so to shoot 300 here was a great thing to accomplish," Brozek said. "To be able do it with so many amazing people here with me made it even more special. I owe all of them for helping me stay relaxed, so the drinks are on me tonight."
