LAS VEGAS – Derek Magno of Cicero, New York, averaged more than 250 across nine games Thursday and Friday at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships to take the lead in Regular All-Events with a 2,255 total.
The 43-year-old right-hander became the first competitor at the 2024 tournament to record a 700 series in each event and posted scores of 779 in singles, 761 in doubles and 715 in team at the South Point Bowling Plaza to take over the top spot by 76 pins.
Kevin McCune of Munster, Indiana, and Collin Howe of Riverton, Illinois, previously shared the lead with 2,179.
Magno, a 2019 Team All-Events champion at the USBC Open Championships, also leaves his 20th tournament appearance in third place in Regular Team, Regular Singles and Team All-Events.
On Thursday, he helped Mento Produce of Baldwinsville, New York, to a 3,245 total, which included 290 from Magno in Game 3. In singles on Friday, he rolled 29 strikes on the way to games of 255, 269 and 255.

Magno is no stranger to putting up big numbers at the Open Championships, and he has had some major performances in past visits to the Bowling Plaza.
On the way to victory in Team All-Events in 2019 with a 9,983 total, Magno also posted three sets above 700 to finish fifth in Regular All-Events (2,142) and Regular Doubles with Conti (1,404). He also fired a perfect game to close his team set.

The record was broken again in 2022 by DiLaura Brothers 1 of Clinton Township, Michigan, with 10,585, and Mento Produce finished the year in third place.
