Merriman takes top men's spot at 33rd SWIBC Fall Singles Classic

The 2009-10 collegiate bowling season began with University of North Texas senior Jonathan Merriman defeating University of Houston's Todd Moreno 2-1 (192-242, 225-178, 227-199) in the championship match of the 33rd SWIBC Fall Singles Classic, which was held Sept. 19-20 at Palace Lanes in Houston, Texas.

Before dropping the opening game of the title match to Moreno, Merriman had won six match-play games in a row. The run began in the Round of 16 when Merriman rebounded from an opening-game loss to defeat West Texas A&M's Bradley Robinson 2-1 (203-223, 248-181, 255-237).

Merriman's next four victories came at the expense of a pair of Houston bowlers, Mike McCordic and Gary Scrogin. Merriman downed McCordic 2-0 (223-201, 276-194) in the Round of 8 and Scrogin 2-0 (226-171, 212-189) in the Round of 4 to set up the title tilt with Moreno.

Moreno, the No. 15 seed for match play, earned his shot at the title by knocking off three higher-seeded bowlers, No. 2 Sean Lavery-Spahr 2-1 (226-239, 278-212, 247-234), No. 7 Richard Cordrey 2-1 (182-237, 227-210, 180-168) and No. 3 Frank Papandrea 2-1 (223-222, 200-225, 187-146). Defeating Merriman would have given Moreno the distinction of having beaten the tournament's top three seeds.

Merriman earned the No. 1 seed for match play by virtue of the four-game total of 914 (228.50 average) he put up during qualifying. Merriman's North Texas teammate, Sean Lavery-Spahr, qualified second with 902. Papandrea was the only other bowler to break 900 during qualifying; he shot 901.
