Midwest duo raises bar in Standard Doubles at 2017 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS - The bar again has been raised in Standard Doubles at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
Ramon Pagan and Raymond Haran of Chicago had the pins falling their way Tuesday at the South Point Bowling Plaza as they combined for games of 387, 448 and 356 on the way to a 1,191 total. Cody Maier and James Medina of Spring Creek, Nevada, previously held the lead with 1,180.
Pagan, a teacher, and Haran, a police officer for the City of Chicago, have seen a lot of time together on the lanes, including bowling league at Habetler Bowl, a family-owned 32-lane bowling center that has been around since 1957.
Their comfort and camaraderie were evident as they worked together during doubles at the USBC Open Championships.
Pagan, a 46-year-old right-hander making his eighth tournament appearance, and first since 2006, led the effort Tuesday with games of 198, 258 and 188 for a 644 series, while Haran, a 50-year-old right-hander making his seventh trip to the Open Championships, added 189, 190 and 168 for 547.
Up in his final frame in a must-mark situation to take the lead, Pagan delivered a strike to secure the top spot.
"I was just focusing on making a good shot, and I ended up striking on the first shot." Pagan said. "The team helped me stay loose. They were joking and keeping us relaxed, and that made for a good pace."
Despite bowling well, the duo didn't immediately know they were the leaders in the new Standard Division, which includes partners with combined entering averages of 361-418.
"I had some people telling me we were in the lead, and we started watching numbers around the center," Haran said. "After we were told that for our division, we were the number, is when it clicked and sank in. Knowing I had my teammates behind me and my partner Ramon was bowling well were my motivation, and that helped me stay loose."
Pagan added 631 in singles and 533 in team for a 1,808 all-events total. Jacob Boresch of Kenosha, Wisconsin, leads Regular All-Events with 2,122.
Haran had 503 in team and 462 in singles for a 1,512 all-events effort. Stephanie Sanders of Bakersfield, California, leads Standard All-Events with 1,826.
Individuals in the Regular Division have entering averages of 210 and above, while Standard bowlers have entering averages of 181-209.
