Minnesota bowler sets pace in Standard Division at 2025 Open Championships
March 11, 2025

BATON ROUGE, La. – Scott Buermann of Otsego, Minnesota, posted his top series and all-events score at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Tuesday to take the early lead in Standard Singles and Standard All-Events at the 2025 event.
The 41-year-old right-hander took over the top spot on the leaderboard at the Raising Cane’s River Center with a 680 series in singles, which helped him finish with the first 1,800 in the Standard Division in 2025 – 1,807.
Justin Teasley of Effingham, Illinois, previously led Standard Singles with 664, and Houston’s Derrick Mitchell started the day leading Standard All-Events with 1,748.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Buermann, who made his fourth appearance at the USBC Open Championships.
Buermann was able to put steady sets in during his first two events – team and doubles. He started his team event with a set of 567. In his doubles squad, he was able to finish with a 560 series.
He saved his best for last to end his time at the River Center, rolling games of 289, 215 and 176 in singles to take the lead. Buermann started his first game with 10 strikes before a 7 pin stood on his 11th delivery.
“I come out here with a group of friends from my hometown lanes and to have a good time,” Buermann said. “But, to be able to bowl well is icing on the cake.”
Reflecting on his time at the Open Championships, Buermann said, “This has probably been my best year yet.” His previous high set (571) and all-events score (1,625) took place during his debut in 2019.
Holding the lead in two events won’t stop him from setting future goals at the tournament, either, as he wants to continue his journey and reach a 700 series on the championship lanes in the near future.
The Standard Division features bowlers with entering averages of 156-175.
The Open Championships is celebrating its third trip to Baton Rouge in 2025 and scheduled to feature more than 58,000 bowlers and 11,600 five-player teams competing across 150 consecutive days at the River Center.
