Minnesota team finds success at 2017 Women's Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Garden Center Lanes group of Alexandria, Minnesota, once again delivered on the championship lanes at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, taking over the top spot in Ruby Team on Friday.
Garden Center Lanes 1 moved into the lead at the Raising Cane's River Center with games of 686, 679 and 687 for a 2,052 total. The team finished in third place in Ruby Team last year at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
TTC Ladies 1 of Alta Loma, California, previously held the lead this year in Baton Rouge with 2,043.
Amy Dawson led the way Friday for Garden Center Lanes 1 with a 593 series and was joined by Susan Brede (533), Jen Teaser (504) and Katie Hallstrom (422).
The teammates didn't think they were in contention for the lead after comparing their opening-game score to last year's total of 828, but their consistency helped them set the pace in 2017.
"It wasn't my best performance, but I'm happy with it," said Dawson, who moved from Minnesota to Cincinnati last year for work. "I'm just glad they wanted me back."
Garden Center Lanes finished the 2016 event with a 2,206 total, and Canucks of London, Ontario, Canada, won the Ruby Team title in Las Vegas with 2,334.
Brede has had the experience of holding onto a lead at the USBC Women's Championships after helping Joyner Garden Center win the 1978 Division I Team title in Miami.
"It's not old hat because it was 39 years ago," said Brede, who made her 41st Women's Championships appearance. "It's great to be on top."
Brede credits the lane conditions at Garden Center Lanes for helping prepare the team for its trip to Baton Rouge, and now they'll wait and see if they've posted another top-five score.
"I'm part owner (of Garden Center Lanes), and we've always had a tougher shot," Brede said. "It does make you better at handling tougher conditions. We usually can grind things out, as we like to say."
Ruby Team features four-player teams with combined entering averages of 650-724.
