LAS VEGAS
- Ron Mohr of Las Vegas rolled a perfect game Friday to lead qualifying at the 2019 Super Senior Classic at Sam's Town Bowling Center.

The 2017 champion finished qualifying with a 2,863 total for 12 games, a 238.58 average, which included the first 300 game of the 2019 event, to surpass opening-round leader Kevin Croucher of Grants Pass, Oregon, who dropped to second with a 2,793 score.

Japan's Takeo Sakai is in third place with 2,737, and Ben Hoefs of Mobile, Alabama, averaged more than 246 on Friday to jump into fourth place with 2,735. Alan Sabin of Camas Valley, Oregon, rounds out the top five with 2,694.

Each round of the 2019 Super Senior Classic, which is open to United States Bowling Congress members age 60 and older, is being livestreamed at BowlTV.com.

Mohr rolled games of 279, 192, 229, 182, 300 and 247 for a 1,429 total Friday on the burn variation of this week's 40-foot oil pattern, after posting a similar score during his opening round Thursday on the fresh (1,434).

Although the sets were only five pins apart for the 63-year-old right-hander, they couldn't have been more different.

Consistency was his key Thursday, rolling six games above 200. On Friday, however, Mohr had two games below 200 and two over 270.

"It was more of a coincidence that the numbers were that close," Mohr said. "After I shot 182, I really didn't like what I saw. I knew I was in the hunt, and things just loosened up to allow me to go 140 (pins) over (par) the last two games."

Mohr made a ball change heading into Game 5, along with an educated guess, when he stepped up on the approach for his first frame.

"I went to a ball that would read a little sooner and be a little smoother downlane," Mohr said. "I made a good guess and really liked the motion I saw. I caught a couple of breaks on that pair, and when I see the motion that I like, I know that the potential is there."

Croucher, who's also a 63-year-old right-hander, had a similar day as he hit the fresh variation of the pattern Friday, posting two scores below 200 and two over 250 to finish the block with a 1,334 total. He rolled 1,459 for his six games on the burn Thursday.

"It was weird, because the heads were drier today than they were yesterday," Croucher said. "Multiply that with the lanes being tighter downlane, and it made it hard to get the ball to go through the pins the right way. I had some good games and saved the bad games, so it was good."

At the conclusion of Friday's final round, the field was cut from 198 players to the top 50 for Saturday's Cashers' Round, which begins at noon Eastern.

Tensions were high throughout Sam's Town as the cut number jumped up and dropped down during the final block, but the final spot settled with Houston's Donald Robinson, who finished with a 2,475 total, a 206.25 average.

Defending champion Mike Dias of Lafayette, Colorado, also advanced during the exciting final block, rolling 220 in his final game Friday to move into 42nd place with a 2,487 total.

Saturday's Cashers' Round will include six additional games, and the top 12 players, based on 18-game pinfall totals, will advance to round-robin match play.

Robert Reed of Weed, California, sits in 12th place heading into the Cashers' Round with a 2,636 total, a 219.67 average.

Advancers will be split into two groups for match play - odd qualifiers in one group and evens in the other - and match play will consist of six games, including a position round.

At the end of match play, the top qualifier in each group will earn an automatic spot into Sunday's stepladder finals, with seeding (No. 1 and No. 2) being determined by total pins.

The second, third and fourth qualifiers in each group will advance to a pair of group stepladders, scheduled for Sunday at noon Eastern. The winner of each group stepladder also will advance to the championship round and meet in the opening match. The stepladder finals of the Super Senior Classic will begin at 2 p.m. Eastern.
