MonacelliInsideWINTER GARDEN, Fla. –
In his second tournament on the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour, Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli moved to the top of the leaderboard Monday after second-round qualifying in the PBA Senior Don Carter Memorial Open presented by Ebonite at Carter Family Bowl.

The Venezuelan native, who has won 19 PBA Tour titles and is the only foreign-born player inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame, finished the day with a 2,734 12-game pinfall total to hold a narrow four-pin lead over fellow Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in second with 2,730.

Monacelli, who finished in a tie for 16th after Sunday’s first round, averaged 238.5 with games of 209, 238, 266, 215, 235 and 268 in Monday’s round.

“Today I was able to find the right angle to the pocket right away and all I had to do was adjust my speed,” said the 50-year-old Monacelli. “The conditions don’t change as drastically as they do on the PBA Tour so you can adjust quicker. In regular tour tournaments it seems like I’m always one step behind and it’s harder to stay ahead of the changes.”

Monacelli is also the first foreign born player to win PBA Player of the Year honors achieving the feat in 1989 and ’90. Just last week he was inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame.

“It’s great to be out here to see and bowl with some of the guys I competed with on the (PBA) Tour,” said Monacelli, who finished 19th in his Senior Tour debut in last week’s Senior Sun Bowl In the Villages. “There’s some great bowlers out here and you still have to work hard. Last week I was bowling very well in qualifying and then I had a 160 game because I didn’t adjust quick enough.”

Six-game qualifying continues Tuesday after which the 106-player field will be cut to the top 32 who will advance to match play Wednesday morning. Round of 8 and championship rounds will get underway Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
