Mother and daughter take lead at 2019 USBC Women's Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - Robin Holton of Omaha, Nebraska, and Rebecca Hernandez of Leander, Texas, share a special bond as mother and daughter, and now, they share the Ruby Doubles lead at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
Hernandez led the duo Friday at Northrock Lanes with games of 179, 213 and 245 for a 637 series, while Holton added 174, 211 and 201 for a 586 series to help the pair to a 1,223 total. They surpassed Mary Sanford of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lori Wacker of Burleson, Texas, who previously led at the 100th edition of the USBC Women's Championships with 1,143.
"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Holton, who made her 18th appearance at the event. "It's awesome to do this. Especially at the 100th celebration of this tournament."
Hernandez, who made her fifth Women's Championships appearance, echoed her mother's sentiment.
"I'm shocked," Hernandez said. "I'm really excited, but shocked."
Holton credited a change in her equipment to finding success at the 48-lane venue.
"I changed balls this time," Holton said. "To one without counterweights. It made a huge difference for me."
Hernandez was able to find success Friday by relying on an old friend.
"I'm just bowling with the same ball," Hernandez said. "I have been bowling with it for the last 10 years."
The pair also felt part of their success came from competing early in the 2019 event, which kicked off April 20 and will run until June 30. Now, they hope to see their names at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the tournament.
"We bowled early this time," Holton said. "Every other year, we always have bowled later in the tournament, figuring we would wait to see how the scoring pace was going from the other bowlers. Now, we set the goal early. We'll probably be following the results daily as they come in on BOWL.com and Facebook."
Hernandez also moved into the top five in her division in all-events. Hernandez, who's in the Emerald Division, rolled sets of 529 in singles and 477 in team for a 1,643 total, which puts her in fourth place.
Ruby Doubles features pairs with combined entering averages of 350-379. Emerald All-Events has bowlers with averages of 160-174.
